The Lakers were not trying to do the same deal the Pelicans got for Davis. The Pelicans got a good deal due to the Lakers having a bad season and striking out on getting Paul George in free agency.

I do agree that maybe they should've forced Kawhi's hand and made him play for them instead of taking the Raptors deal so quickly but I understand why they didn't want to deal with the distractions for another season.
