Live as a coward or die as a hero. Who's really selfish?

recently read up on something regarding this and thought about it like are we really looking at this right?

first lets start with what a hero is.
A hero is someone who gives of himself, often putting his own life at great risk, for the greater good of others.

and what is a coward
Coward-a person who is contemptibly lacking in the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things.

now lets say, there a fire.

you get out but its people still trapped and the building is leaning over about to collapse.

now in theory.......my self preservation is not important because i should try to help otherwise i would be a coward. some say its a label for life until proven otherwise.
but if i throw away my selfish self preservation and go running into the building ....i am hailed as a hero or hero in training if i die. Now people will say this will follow you thru life...but will it really? will it not be forgotten if another hero emerges with a more daring fete? And if you die, will people really remember you if the superbowl happens in a month?

so is it really selfish if i dont want to die for someone else(outside of family)?
or is it selfish for society to expect someone to risk there life for them? thats alot to ask.

what say you? you running into the fire or are you watching from the sideline?

How you're perceived shouldn't be an issue. To consider that makes you selfish either way.

Nah but for real..its situational. Depends on who's in there, where we are, how crazy that fire is...all that...Hell, even on planes they tell you to secure your mask first before assisting others.

Are you trying to justify cowardice? Because at the end of the day you're either a coward or you got heart. Also if you're only doing something ''heroic" to be remembered you're not a hero. A

A hero doesn't always mean to literally run into a burning building although it's heroic. A hero is someone who operates in the spirit of courage instead of fear in whatever situation we find ourselves in. Putting yourself on the line is heroic.

Malcolm X was a hero, Muhammad Ali was a hero, Harriet Tubman was a hero among others. A hero inspires and encourages others. We have local heroes and people who sacrifice their own for the greater good in various ways every day. Salute to them.

And it's not society that puts pressure on us to be heroes, it's our conscience that calls on us to be heroes. We either answer the call or we don't. And when we don't it's called cowardice.

What if someone was as powerful mentally as king or Malcolm but didn't want to lead the people?
Would he be a coward for not stepping up?

An justifying cowardice? Nah.

If my loved Ines are not involved...mostly I don't be either.
Why should I take myself away from them to save a stranger?

It's not about wanting to lead it's about answering the call when it's time to.

I don't think most leaders and heroes want to be heroes, there just comes a point in one's life that it comes down to "if not me then who/ if not us then who"

So yes if that person ignores or doesn't answer that call that person is a coward.

Hero is often confused with sacrifice. If u run in the building and ur just another body burned ur not a hero. U made the ultimate sacrifice though. If u run in the building pull out 3 people and can’t save anymore ur a hero.

I ain’t dying for niggas I don’t know. I will help if I can. If not imma be on the sidelines smh saying that damn fire was tragic. God bless the dead

Do you think it's more beneficial for your family and loved ones for you to be a living example of a coward or a dead example of a hero?

Nothing in this world is better than actually being there for your son

I had a fucked schedule and me and son barely had time together even though we stay in the same house.

He offered to help me to look for another job because he said , "we don't spend enough days together"

That shit made me feel some type of. He would facetime when im work just so he can see me and shit.

But Im in better position when it comes to work and he said "im so happy I can see you more now"

Going to the Monster Truck show at the end of the month.

You have to weight your options. Sometimes being smart and thinking is the best choice. How can I help someone out of a burning building about to collapse? I have no tools, fire jacket, mask, no nothing. I could be making things worst.

I respect you. You come across as someone who cares about the conditions of Black people and people of color. But to say "why would I save a stranger" is contradictory to all of that.

I’m only a hero for my child. Possibly my mother but I know if I had to save someone she would want me to save my son. My brothers would say the same as well.

Anybody else, it was nice knowing you.
