HBO Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel

All the questions from the audience

I wonder if they were encouraged to do that beforehand or if the taping was just so awkward the audience just joined in on their own to help him thru it

They were encouraged beforehand. This was filmed at the comedy store in LA. As were his previous specials actually. They have multiple rooms all different sizes and acoustics. I cant remember which room this special was filmed in, but every night they sell tickets for each room all with a different event or lineup going on. For instance "the original room" is their biggest room and they usually have the popular comedians perform there and its a different lineup every night.

While that's going on, they might be doing roast battles in the "belly room". Then a podcast may be recording in a different room. Tickets for this show were sold promoted as Jerrod filming his HBO special. As you can see the room is much smaller and more intimate. It was most likely mentioned by the warm up comedian about asking jerrod questions and everyone being like a family type vibe.

Just like every other straight black man, I feel I should preface my thoughts with “I ain’t with that gay shit”.

That being said, this was pretty funny at times but heartfelt at the same time. I liked the overall vibe and wasn’t mad that it wasn’t a traditional comedy show. I’d probably categorize this as more of a one man Inside the Actor’s Studio.

Good shit Rothaniel.

Just finished watching this special and it was interesting seeing him struggle through this in real time. I felt bad laughing at the jokes about how hard his relationship has become with his mom but he made this funny as hell. This special is the definition of a comic laughing through their pain.

Every article I've read said this was filmed at the Blue Note Jazz Club

It was a good special IMO.

His father was a wild nigga to be fucking his best friend aunt. It's one thing to cheat on your wife but a whole other level of disrespect to do it so close to home and with your son best friend family member.

Funniest joke came from that.

When his dad found out he was gay said, and I’m paraphrasing, “Where the hell did I go wrong?! One son is fucking men and the other is only fucking one woman!”

😂

I was dying when he said how his dad responded to him being gay like it takes pressure off of himself. "Alright alright, I fucked up, you fucked up.."

The shit about his brother not showing up..."nigga I make more money than you...by millions" had me cracking up...then you see the hurt on his face and it's like damn he's being abandoned by his family and dealing with it in real time

Dude got up and talked for an hr about what he's ashamed and afraid of. I was kind of amazed watching it. Like I got lost in it.

Dope special.
