Jeezy owns his Masters

The story about her and her masters is flaky. Shes claiming 100% victim but other people saying she knew before hand it was about to be sold & chose not to buy them, but wants to play victim for the media after the fact. And she a known liar, so idk who to believe.

Her own dad worked with the company that owns her shit.

IDK if he worked there, but the story is when she was a kid and wanted to pursue music, her dad moved to whole fam to Nashville to get her signed (hes a banker). Then the label who he was trying to get sign her (i believe it was BigMachine), sign her & her dad bought a percentage of the label. So when she tells the people her whole "started from the very bottom with no help & no one believing in her" gimmick, just know her fam got money and she got a lot of help.

I wonder what a lot of these publishing deals look like. Are there any major and black owned publishing companies?

this shit is confusing lol.

So lemme see if I got this right...

If I own my MASTERS.. I can do whatever I want with that music and I can determine how its used.. if somebody samples my shit.. I get paid.

If my shit is played on the radio, streaming services, commercials, movies etc... that's PUBLISHING and I get whatever cut from the publishing company that was agreed to in my publishing deal?

@ the bolded: Yes, but only partially.

Owning the masters means you're owed money off of the usage of the master recording (even if they sample it from CD, vinyl, cassette, or mp3/internet) plus rollover percentage. You have to grant the artist sampling your music a license and you get paid from that.

However, if you don't control the publishing to your music and someone samples it, you get nothing from that end of it; whomever controls your pubs gets that money. If you own it, then you get that copyright money as well and that can be good money.

Sir Mix A Lot owns his masters and his publishing and made a grip off of Pussycat Dolls and Nicki Minaj for sampling his music.
