There's a lot of different vpn's, the basic jist of how it works, is that when you sign into a vpn your data goes through a bunch of privately owned servers that serve as "tunnels" for your data. It's all encrypted which makes it hard for companies or anybody who wants your data to get to it. If you have a raspberry pi or a good router you can make your own, but that's way out of my league in what I know.

Before you invest in a vpn, do your research on the company, some vpns support chrome others don't for example. Some are created exclusively for mobile devices and some are better than others.
