As their marriage quietly unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family—forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.

Is This Thing On

PRAISE: When one door closes another one opens. For Alex Novak the door that closes is his marriage and the one that opens is stand up comedy. Will Arnett as Alex is great. Its a performance that's realistic, funny and heartfelt. I think the movie really captures how a divorce effects family and friends. In fact one of the most realistic moments is the fear of telling your parents even though your over forty years old. Laura Dern as Tess Novak also does a great job. She and Arnett are a good on screen match up because they both display the honesty of a couple coming apart and dealing with all the repercussions that come with it. I thought Andra Day as Christine Bradley Cooper as Balls the married with angst couple that are friends of Alex and Tess did a good job. Theres this funny and dark rhythm to their marriage that at times chafes with what Alex and Tess are going through. Writer and Director Bradley Cooper along with writers Mark Chappell and Will Arnett love for comedians shines through as open mic nights, and that blend of real life situations with a humorous spin from various comedians are fully displayed. The title of the movie is great as it applies to couples actually hearing each other instead of just dead air.

PROBLEMS: There's definitely an ultra predictable moment. The end of the movie felt a little tacked on as if tests audiences didn't get on board with a more realistic ending.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½
