Is There Such Thing As A Rapper That Should Be In Everybody's Top 10?

This here. Jay, pac, big, Nas. Skill wise should be on everyone's list. But people have the right to put who they want up there.

But if you were born in ,say, 1996, that would make you 25/26 years old.

That means you missed out on Pac and Big and you don't even remember the Nas/Jay battle.

I could understand how a 25 year old wouldn't have Nas, Pac, Jay, or Big in their top 5/10 the same way I'm the only one on ABW that remembers Melle Mel.

When I was in high school we used to argue between KRS, Rakim, LL Cool J, and in my senior year Ice Cube dropped Amerikkkas Most Wanted and Kill at Will, so he got added to the discussion.

Nas was on Live at the Barbeque by Main Source so we had heard of him, but nobody was calling him The Goat.

And Jay Z was on a song called The Originators by Jaz but nobody was calling him The Goat.

this is actually one of the few times I’m not gonna insult you. This is the reason why I will never argue with someone who was born in the late 90s when it comes to rap music. I’m not gonna take someone’s opinion seriously if they were toddlers when big and pac were around and when guys like Nas and Jay were making classic albums. I’d automatically assume they never listen to any of their albums

People from the same generation don't even have to have the same top 5 - 10 people in any order. Folks are different and what entertains them and catches their ear is different. So what one person might find as great wordplay the next person might hear and be like they doing to much. Neither person is wrong just how they feel about some thing is 100% subjective.

Ehh...somebody being born later doesn't mean you can't take their opinion seriously on music. If that were the case then alot of the old school shit our parents and older relatives passed down to us we wouldn't be able to discuss. Niggas here weren't old enough or around to experience the height of alot of people's careers that we call legends.

You make a good point. Top 10 is def a age relevant discussion. But also, if you a fan of a sport. You know who the legends are. A 18 year old kid rn who is a basketball fan should know who kobe n mj was n their skill level

I mean you can have your own top 10 but if its someone i dont like on there then i will say you list is shit and you dont know hiphop

^every hiphop person

When making a playlist it doesn't matter not one fucking bit where a rapper ranks to be on that playlist. If the song is a good song it goes on the playlist. Period

Niggas obsession with rankings is stupid. Just listen to the songs you like and chill. Fuck a list.

Yea

been meanin to make a thread bout this

how makin comparisons pertainin to music can be detrimental

cuz like you said, end of the day you either like the song or not

so tryna compare artists or songs you like could take away from the listening experience

Just for the record, I don't have anybody that came out after the Rocafella/Dipset/Kanye era in my top 25 (Really top 100)

I turned 30 in 2003 and 40 in 2013.

None of the new generation of MCs move me like the guys from the 80s, 90s, and early 00s.

I just lost interest in the direction of Hip Hop.

I think the last Hip Hop albums I really enjoyed was A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It From Here, Kendrick - Damn

And a few Griselda freestyles (I have a playlist of Griselda freestyles, but I've never really listened to their music)

Otherwise I make my own music and that's what I listen to.

Edit. I remember when Drake's Take Care album came out. Everybody made a big deal about it. I remember buying a physical copy from a store that still sold CDs. I was so disappointed. I'm sure I listened to it a few times, hoping it would grow on me.

I just don't see what people like about Drake.

This is one of those Hip Hop discussions I hate having because people can’t differentiate between personal tastes and respecting skill

If you love and cherish the art of rap lyrics, then someone like Nas or Big Pun has to be respected or saluted as they are both pioneers

But that doesn’t mean they should be in your top 10 list of artists you love and always want to listen to
