I fuck wit’ each artist heavy as solo artist pause nh but I’ll admit I never really rocked too many LOX group albums in tha past....after Biggie got clapped, Shyne shootin’ tha club up, G Dep confessin’ to a 10+ yr old murder and B Rob fallin’ off I stopped fuckin’ wit’ Bad Boy as a company, group and label...then RR LOX picked up but not enough to crack my top 5...wit’ that bein’ said
De La Soul had a classic album (arguably two or three) in Three Feet High & Rising. It might not have much replay value in 2019, but at the time it was released it was fresh, new and different.
At the time (88/89) every rapper wore a big fat gold chain, and a Kangol hat. Every rapper had an album cover standing next to a Mercedes Benz with a light skinned girl in a tight dress. That was the norm.
When De La Soul came out, it was ok to be a regular guy that doesn't have a gold chain, or a Mercedes Benz. In other words, prior to the Native Tounges, success was measured by the size of your gold chain and what series Mercedes you owned. The Native Tounges made it ok to be the regular guy that doesn't pack a gat, doesn't shoot people, doesn't take out sucker MCs, and just raps about every day life. Having said that, A Tribe Called Quest was better imo
Even Eric B & Rakim had an album cover sitting on a Rolls Royce
Having said that, The Lox are dope, but I don't think they ever shifted the landscape like The Native Tounges.
Did you hear the first 4 albums (Three Feet High & Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Bulhoone Mind State & Stakes Is High) when they were released? Because I did and they were a perfect balance to NWA, 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy, and later, Snoop, Bone Thugs, 2Pac, Biggie. Not saying you have to like them, but they have a solid discography. Their style is just a lil different. They aren't Alpha Males and they don't try to be.
