Is Public Schooling Detrimental to the Social/Emotional Development of Children?

I think the concept of public school is just fine. We just dont put enough money into schools period. Teachers get low pay and often have to buy own supplies. My sister teaches in Richmond VA a large immigrant population. Why does her school have ESL teachers but none know Spanish? Her husband teaches high school kids. Ive seriously considered teaching as a career but never taught a class ive had friends recommend i take some sub classes just to see. But i think i can do it they need black men to teach. So why not?

The social aspect of public school is the best and the worst. Whole lot of depressed kids and adults based off school experiences. Staff may not be equipped for it especially in under served communuties. How can you hold every school to the same standards when the community is held to it or blocked from it. Kids in downtown Newport News aint no different from kids in Hampton. Its the funding that makes the gap. And funding like anything from the feds is up to somebody who does not send their kid to those schools.

And learning about white people soley when most public school kids are POC is not helping

I can't do home schoolin but I think parental involvement is key. A "good" public school can offer great teaching n extracurriculars.

I've read a few studies that suggested kids who have motivated, invested parents tend to do well no matter which school they go to. All things being equal, home life has the biggest impact.

Took the words right out if my mouth.

Look, there is no substitute for raising your child at home that's were it starts. We live in a society where people are quick to place the blame on something else when in reality you haven't done your job. I'm a director of a learning facility and too many time the parents there are "concerned" with their child's learning but when you offer avenues for them to participate (conference, volunteering in the classroom, observing the classroom etc) and take a look at all the things we do to educate their child they don't come they say oh that's ok or I can't make it. What that is saying to me is you see problems at home and want to find someone else at fault.

Do I think the public school system and it's teachers are flawless? NO! However private schools aren't flawless; lots of children GET abused in these settings, homeschooling isn't flawless; there's not a chance in hell that your child will socially be ready for the world, and even with communal schooling you are limiting their experiences in the social emotional development. I do know the more involved you are wherever you choose the more likely you and your child will get better results.

As for the labeling of special needs YES the public school system is notorious for doing these things, especially if they know the parents aren't as informed. My suggestion is to really have a talk with your pediatrician about it an make sure they support you and your child's best interest before the school tries their b.s. We knew how bright and full of energy lil du was by the time he was 2 so we had a talk with his doctor about his "energy" because we both experienced the labeling issues in one aspect or another. She told us then "they will try to label him, but I see nothing wrong HE is developing beyond his age group now, and that will MORE than likely continue as he starts school. He just needs to be challenged which will have to be something you push for" she continues to support us in that area.

Im growing to hate public school. Especially after working in one for three years now, ugh.
