Ashanti recently announced that she would follow in Taylor Swift's footsteps and re-record her classic albums in an attempt to gain ownership over her music.
The singer and songwriter recently sat down with Angie Martinez and reflected on the Verzuz battle between Fat Joe and Ja Rule. She also described seeing Nelly for the first time in six years, praying with DMX, re-recording her music. When Martinez asked the reasoning behind re-recording her albums, Ashanti explained she wanted to show the importance of ownership.
"The thinking behind that is showing the business side of ownership and how important it is to own," Ashanti responded. "And then once I re-record the first album, [I own it]. So everything purchased from that moment I own."
After Martinez posted a teaser clip of the topic on Instagram, Irv Gotti joined the comments section and expressed his disappointment in his former artist's decision. Gotti stated that he owned the masters and a large amount of publishing on the records. He argued that Ashanti was attempting to undermine his ownership stake and "f***" him out of his masters.
"@angiemartinez just for super clarity. I own all those great Ashanti Albums Angie. I own the Masters. And. I Produced all those great Ashanti Albums. So I also own a good portion of the Publishing," Gotti wrote. "What she is trying to do is re record all those great records. And put them out on her label. She can do this under the COVER laws. But she is basically trying to f*** me out of my Masters. And make people decide which album to listen too or stream. Hoping her loyal fans will choose her version. But hey. I stand on the Magic that was created. And I wanna see her duplicate that Magic. It's f***** up really. But such is life."
Gotti also questioned if the re-recordings would match the sound of the original tracks. When one commenter raised the concern, the former Murder Inc. boss responded and wondered if the new producers could execute the sound in the same manner as his production team.
"Me. Chink. And 7 did our thing with her albums," he added. "I wanna see what her versions sound like. If it matches the magic we made. Will be interesting."
