Irv Gotti Calls Ashanti's Decision to Re-Record Her Albums "F***** Up"

Ashanti recently announced that she would follow in Taylor Swift's footsteps and re-record her classic albums in an attempt to gain ownership over her music.

The singer and songwriter recently sat down with Angie Martinez and reflected on the Verzuz battle between Fat Joe and Ja Rule. She also described seeing Nelly for the first time in six years, praying with DMX, re-recording her music. When Martinez asked the reasoning behind re-recording her albums, Ashanti explained she wanted to show the importance of ownership.

"The thinking behind that is showing the business side of ownership and how important it is to own," Ashanti responded. "And then once I re-record the first album, [I own it]. So everything purchased from that moment I own."

After Martinez posted a teaser clip of the topic on Instagram, Irv Gotti joined the comments section and expressed his disappointment in his former artist's decision. Gotti stated that he owned the masters and a large amount of publishing on the records. He argued that Ashanti was attempting to undermine his ownership stake and "f***" him out of his masters.

"@angiemartinez just for super clarity. I own all those great Ashanti Albums Angie. I own the Masters. And. I Produced all those great Ashanti Albums. So I also own a good portion of the Publishing," Gotti wrote. "What she is trying to do is re record all those great records. And put them out on her label. She can do this under the COVER laws. But she is basically trying to f*** me out of my Masters. And make people decide which album to listen too or stream. Hoping her loyal fans will choose her version. But hey. I stand on the Magic that was created. And I wanna see her duplicate that Magic. It's f***** up really. But such is life."

Gotti also questioned if the re-recordings would match the sound of the original tracks. When one commenter raised the concern, the former Murder Inc. boss responded and wondered if the new producers could execute the sound in the same manner as his production team.

"Me. Chink. And 7 did our thing with her albums," he added. "I wanna see what her versions sound like. If it matches the magic we made. Will be interesting."

Who re records old albums?

LOL
People trying to create new master recordings

OR

people who are revisiting old work because they feel they can do it better or differently.

Ashanti doesn't strike me as the type of artist to revisit her early songs and do some kinda jazz reimagining of them though

Taylor Swift and countless others have been doing it recently.

It's basically so you can own the most current version of the song.

Usually your label owns the very FIRST time you recorded the song (masters) and released it.

By re-recording it, you can re-release the song on streaming services. Therefore you own the new one and can get all the money from it going forward.

I see no problem with this and he's bragging about it smh
Ehh If all she did was sing words someone else wrote and produced, it is kinda fucked up to later sneak and undercut everyone involved in the record for personal profit. Its not my fault you signed the contract to a record label that gave you that stardom but wanted an aggressive roi.

You fuck up peoples earned ability for generational wealth from years of hard work with moves like that.

Instead of wasting time to re-record old records, have faith in your abilities to be independent moving forward and make new music.

lol man fuck that tho. Why shouldn’t somebody get all their money if they can I thought you especially would support that. Why would you put somebody else generational wealth over yours?

ok so you only support capitalism when it suits you specifically huh? interesting lol…

I never said I wouldnt do the same if in her position but i can also acknowledge how its a dirty tactic and why Irv has a right to feel slighted.

Don’t like it? don't sign the contract.

dont like it dont sign the contract.

So the label can fuck you over but it’s wrong to cut them out? And you know and I know that’s like 15 years ago of course the artists now want to own their shit. I thoughts that’s why y’all liked capitalism ownership

lol Nigga basically made the argument for why it's smart for her to do what she's doing. She's the artist, but he owns everything. I'm sure if they sat down at the table and worked something out it wouldn't go this far, but we all know he wasn't trying to do that.
