United Nations votes to condemn the embargo on Cuba

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on October 29, 2025, to condemn the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba for the 33rd consecutive year, adopting a resolution titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” with 165 votes in favor, 7 against, and 12 abstentions. The countries voting against the resolution were the United States, Israel, Argentina, Hungary, North Macedonia, Paraguay, and Ukraine, marking a shift from the previous year when only the U.S. and Israel opposed it, with 187 in favor and one abstention. The U.S. attempted to gain broader support by alleging that up to 5,000 Cubans are fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, a claim rejected by Cuba as unfounded. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez described the embargo as a “flagrant, massive and systematic violation of the human rights of our people” and called for an end to the decades-long blockade.
