This is a short series on rappers who were at one point dope and either lost their skill or fell out of the conversation. Were they ever considered to be top 3/5 spitters at the time? Not about GOATs, just top 3/5 during the time period you believe they were in their best form.

In his prime, how good was DMX?

He came out HOT and kept it running. I can’t really talk iLL on X. He was ferocious. His rhymes were great gritty tales and his husky voice acquainted the flow and appearance.

DMX was great. His only fault and it wasn’t his own. He dropped when certain heavy weights were dropping. If he waited for the hip hop transition he would be held even greater than he was...oh don’t do drugs

DMX was the best for his time as somebody already said, when X was in his prime he was going against other heavyweights. JayZ, Ja Rule, & Nas. Jay-Z didn't really blow up until '98 same time DMX got on which took some of the spotlight.

Drugs really messed up DMX's career (like Tyson catching that case fucked up his boxing career). Then he dropped a dud with "Then there was X" album (Then again, X, Nas, & Jay-Z all dropped BS albums in '99). He came back with a solid effort in "The Great Depression" but by '02-03 I stopped listening. G-Unit/Aftermath/Shady completely took over the game.

Hell naw that album is dope as fuck

Dark Man X was certainly the best at the time. There’s no denying that impact as soon as he stepped on the scene.

He was top dawg with his first 3 albums, slid a bit with the Great Depression swung back stronger wit Grand Champ save for 50 n Hov dropping big albums that year.

But those fuckin drugs, erratic behavior and his inability to stay the FUCK out of jail derailed his career. Otherwise he’d be in more convos
