There’s another interview I think it’s Combat Jack where he goes more in depth about having to move from NY to CA and somehow knowing someone involved w creating the Fresh Prince

I could never get down with the Fresh Prince anyways. I come from the hood, and having access to a butler while living smack in the middle of white suburbia, while trying to maintain a sense of identity with my upbringing was never my cup of tea. The surrounding cast in the Fresh Prince felt like interlopers, trying to gain insights into the psyche of how young black men perceived the 'American Dream'. At least Martin was true to himself regardless of his company; he was a young professional with his whole life ahead of him (and he was a nigga with attitude). Then again, I was too young to understand when both of these shows were on the air. But Cole was the redeemable character on Martin for me.
