Amidst ongoing protests in France, the country has just passed a new bill that will allow police to remotely access suspects’ cameras, microphones, and GPS on cell phones and other devices.

As reported by Le Monde, the bill has been criticized by the French people as a “snoopers” charter that allows police unfettered access to the location of its citizens. Moreover, police can activate cameras and microphones to take video and audio recordings of suspects. The bill will reportedly only apply to suspects in crimes that are punishable by a minimum of five years in jail and Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti claimed that the new provision would only affect a few dozen cases per year. During a debate over the bill yesterday, French politicians added an amendment that orders judge approval for any surveillance conducted under the scope of the bill and limits the duration of surveillance to six months, according to Le Monde.

For organized crime, the police can have access to the sound and image of a device. This concerns any connected device: telephone, speaker microphone, computer camera, computer system of a car... all without the knowledge of the persons concerned,” French advocacy group La Quadrature du Net said in a statement on Twitter last month, machine translated by Gizmodo. “In view of the growing place of digital tools in our lives, accepting the very principle that they are transformed into police auxiliaries without our being aware of it poses a serious problem in our societies.”

The bill comes after a time when the French government previously expanded police authority via technology. In 2021, The New York Times reported that the French Parliament passed a bill that would expand the French police force’s ability to monitor civilians using drones. French President Emmanuel Macron argued at the time that the bill was meant to protect police officers from increasingly violent protestors.

Late last month, protests began in France over the death of teenager Nahel Merzouk, who was shot and killed by a police officer. Protests have swept the country, with demonstrators frequently clashing with police. The passing of the bill comes as these protests have been raging for nearly two weeks. Macron also threatened to shut down social media platforms, as he claims that protestors are filming, posting, and organizing on apps like TikTok, Snapchat, and Telegram.

If he's not careful, Macron's gonna end up with another French Revolution.

He's either oblivious to the climate of his country.........or he thinks it won't touch him.

Somebody better remind him of his country's history, or the French might have to remind the world of what happened when Marie Antoinette told them to eat cake.

*shrugs* So?? Granted its wrong to stalk someone.

But you should know by now law enforcement, silicon valley, slant eyes (TikTok) and so forth can watch, hear, and stalk you through your phone. Especially if you have a smart phone. This ain't the stone age anymore. Don't like it, cover the cameras and don't always have that phone around you.

Wow. Amazed this isn't bigger news. Talk about Big Brother

The FBI has had this ability all along and it got exposed because of a case against the Genovese crime family. The only way to stop it was to remove the battery from your phone, which is why most modern phones no longer allow you to remove the battery.

Macron doesnt give a fuck cause hes done. His second term ends in a few years and then hes retiring.

He doesnt have to worry about reelection. Thats why hes passing some of these bills without even the support of the legislators at times.

Hes gonna keep giving a ton of power to cops and the law and dip out and have the next president deal with it.

I don't understand how this can pass when the EU has very strict privacy laws
Strict privacy laws for businesses.

The EU dont like apple making money off your data without making sure they explicitly explain to you what data they are collecting and why. This is good btw and better than the US

But the EU dont got strict laws on privacy when it comes to keeping the EU citizens in check.

Heres an example. The EU is supposedly the height of civilization when it comes to freedoms and human rights. But when the Catalans in Spain started talking that separatist talks a few years ago, the EU told Spain to go in there and fuck all them protestors up but do it fast.

So in the same tongue they critize less "civilized" countries for how they treat protestors, they allowed one of their founding members to go in and beat the fuck out of thousands of protestors.

Fuck the EU
