I don't agree. Mbappé came clutch when France needed him but Messi was consistently active first half, second half, extra time and scored his pen in the shootout

The thing about this world cup win and tourney in general, Messi wasn't a passenger. He influenced virtually every single game Argentina played with both goals, assists and overall dictating of play.
