FBI Arrests White Nationalist In Coast Guard Allegedly Planning Terror Attack

A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant who is an alleged white nationalist with a hit list and a plan “to murder innocent citizens on a scale rarely seen in this country” has been arrested by the FBI in the Washington, DC area.

Christopher Hasson planned to “establish a white homeland” by force, according to court records filed in federal court in Maryland and first flagged Wednesday by George Washington University’s Program on Extremism.

The former U.S. marine, who currently serves as an acquisitions officer at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C., was arrested Friday on illegal guns and drug charges. He is scheduled to appear before a judge for a detention hearing on Thursday.

In a filing requesting that Hasson be detained pending trial, prosecutors described him as a “domestic terrorist” who was stockpiling weapons as part of a plot to, in his words, “kill almost every last person on earth.”

As evidence, they provide a photograph of the 15 firearms FBI agents discovered at his Silver Spring home, and a copy of a spreadsheet of his hit list targets, which include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and MSNBC anchor Ari Melber.

A review of Hasson’s web history allegedly found frequent searches for the manifesto of Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian far-right terrorist who murdered 77 people at a summer camp in 2011. Hasson’s email drafts and correspondence also allegedly made frequent mentions of his dreams of carrying out a “bombing/sniper campaign” and engaging in a race war. In one letter to an unnamed American neo-Nazi leader, Hasson allegedly referred to himself as a “long time White Nationalist” who was a skinhead before joining the military.

“From January 2017 to January 2019, the defendant conducted online searches and make thousands of visits for pro-Russian, neo-fascist, and neo-Nazi literature,” prosecutors note in one court filing.

Hasson was charged with possessing firearms as an “unlawful user or addict of controlled substances.” Agents who raided his home found quantities of the opioid Tramadol as well as a weapons cache, according to court documents.

The same unusual charge of possessing guns while abusing drugs was also brought against Jeffrey Clark, the Washington, D.C. neo-Nazi arrested last November.

White Nationalist Coast Guard Pleads Not Guilty To Drug And Firearms Charges

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A Coast Guard officer accused of stockpiling guns and compiling a hit list of prominent Democrats and network TV journalists pleaded not guilty on Monday to drug and firearms charges.

An attorney for Christopher Paul Hasson, 49, entered the plea on his behalf at an arraignment on charges of illegal possession of firearm silencers, possession of firearms by a drug addict and unlawful user, and possession of a controlled substance.

Public defender Liz Oyer didn’t ask for Hasson to be freed on bond and declined to comment after the hearing.

Federal prosecutors have said Hasson is a self-described white nationalist and “domestic terrorist” who “intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”

Hasson has been detained since his Feb. 15 arrest. He faces a maximum of 31 years in prison if convicted of all charges in his four-count indictment last month.

Hasson answered several routine questions from a magistrate judge during Monday’s brief hearing at the federal courthouse in Greenbelt.

Investigators found 15 firearms, including seven rifles, and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition at Hasson’s basement apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland, prosecutors said. Hasson’s Feb. 27 indictment also accuses him of illegal possession of tramadol, an opioid painkiller.

In a court filing, prosecutors said Hasson has espoused extremist views for years and drafted an email in which he said he was “dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth.”

Prosecutors also claim Hasson drew up what appeared to be a computer-spreadsheet hit list that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, presidential hopefuls Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Several network TV journalists — MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and Joe Scarborough and CNN’s Chris Cuomo and Van Jones — also were mentioned.

However, Hasson hasn’t been charged with any terrorism-related offenses. A different public defender has accused prosecutors of making inflammatory accusations against Hasson without providing evidence to back them up.

During a hearing last month, a different magistrate agreed to keep Hasson behind bars but said he was willing to revisit his decision if prosecutors didn’t bring more serious charges within two weeks.

Hasson, a former Marine, worked at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington on a program to acquire advanced new cutters for the agency. He was a lieutenant at the time of his arrest.

White Nationalist Coast Guard Officer Isn’t Facing Terrorism Charges

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — A Coast Guard lieutenant accused of stockpiling guns and compiling a hit list of prominent Democrats and network TV journalists is seeking his release from federal custody since prosecutors haven’t charged him with any terrorism-related offenses.

Christopher Hasson, 49, has remained in custody since his Feb. 15 arrest and subsequent indictment in Maryland on firearms and drug charges. Hasson’s attorney, Liz Oyer, wrote in a court filing Monday that prosecutors recently disclosed that they don’t expect to seek any additional charges.

In a February court filing, prosecutors called Hasson a “domestic terrorist” and said he “intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.” They also said he is a self-described white nationalist who espoused extremist views for years and drafted an email in which he said he was “dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth.”

During a Feb. 21 detention hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Day agreed to keep Hasson held in custody but said he was willing to revisit his decision if prosecutors didn’t bring more serious charges within two weeks. Oyer, an assistant federal public defender, is asking Judge Day to schedule another detention hearing for Hasson “at the earliest agreeable date for all parties.”

Oyer said her client’s alleged domestic terrorism activities were “the heart of the government’s case for detention.” A prosecutor wrote in the February court filing that the drug and firearms charges were the “proverbial tip of the iceberg.”

“No other crimes have been charged,” Oyer wrote. “Moreover, during a recent status call, government counsel advised the Court and defense counsel that it does not expect to file a superseding indictment in this matter.”

Prosecutors haven’t responded in writing to Oyer’s request. Marcia Murphy, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Robert Hur’s office, declined to comment.

Hasson pleaded not guilty last month to charges of illegal possession of firearm silencers, possession of firearms by a drug addict and unlawful user, and possession of a controlled substance. He faces a maximum of 31 years in prison if convicted of all four counts in his indictment.

Investigators found 15 guns, including seven rifles, and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition at Hasson’s basement apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland, prosecutors said. Hasson’s Feb. 27 indictment also accuses him of illegal possession of tramadol, an opioid painkiller.

Prosecutors claim Hasson drew up what appeared to be a computer-spreadsheet hit list that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and presidential hopefuls Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Several network TV journalists — MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and Joe Scarborough and CNN’s Chris Cuomo and Van Jones — also were mentioned.

A different public defender has accused prosecutors of making inflammatory accusations against Hasson without providing evidence to back them up.

Hasson, a former Marine, worked at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington on a program to acquire advanced new cutters for the agency. A Coast Guard spokesman has said Hasson will remain on active duty until the case against him is resolved.

Indicted Coast Guard Officer Targeted SCOTUS Justices, Wanted ‘Race War’

The white nationalist Coast Guard officer accused of stockpiling weapons and drafting a kill list must remain in custody pending trial because he “poses a substantial risk of danger to the community,” prosecutors said in a Tuesday filing laying out additional evidence.

Christopher Hasson asked to be released from federal custody last week since prosecutors have not charged him with terrorism-related offenses, despite referring to him as a “domestic terrorist.” The judge overseeing the case had offered Hasson the opportunity to ask to reconsider his detention if prosecutors did not charge him with crimes related to the white nationalist leanings and alleged murder plot they laid out in their initial court filings.

But prosecutors say that can’t happen, noting that a Maryland grand jury brought a four-count indictment charging Hasson with illegal possession of unregistered and unmarked silencers, illegal possession of 17 firearms by an addict of controlled substances, and possession of the opioid Tramadol. The new filing provides new details about what prosecutors allege Hasson planned to do with these materials.

“The defendant’s Internet search history lays bare his views on race, which in turn inform his criminal conduct,” they write.

Those searches, between summer 2017 and his February 2019 arrest, include “white homeland,” “when are whites going to wake up,” “please god let there be a race war,” and “best nigger killing gun.” In addition to the “hit list” he maintained of prominent Democrats and journalists, Hasson searched for the home addresses of two Supreme Court justices “within minutes before and after searching firearm sales websites.”

Prosecutors also lay out additional information about Hasson’s alleged history of fraternizing with dangerous white nationalists. They recount a 1995 police report in which Hasson and an associate paid a late-night visit to an unidentified victim who referred to the pair as “skinheads.” The associate beat the victim with his firearm and served “considerable” time in prison for attempted murder and maiming, prosecutors said.

Hasson’s lawyers have argued that he never meant to carry out any violent acts.
