This example reinforces my point. Drake started running the charts (for hip-hop) around 2011, 2012 but he wasn’t more influential or impactful than Kanye. Did everyone memory hole the pandemonium around the sneakers and how much his taste sense infiltrated fashion? He was tied to the most famous family in the world, Vogue cover for the wedding. Even THE LIFE OF PABLO release was a spectacle (and shitshow). TBH Kanye felt vastly more influential than Hov did during his prime rapping era. Hov’s sphere of influence was very narrow until Beyoncé.From 1998 to 2008, artists like DMX, Eminem, 50 Cent and Nelly were the chart toppers of hip-hop.
However, sales aside, we all knew Jay-Z was that guy.
His presence, influence, and ability to shift and steer the culture was unmatched. And he was selling, just not as high as his counterparts.
50 did a bit of that but couldn't for too long. Jay-Z did it for 10 years.
Drake did it for 15 years. Hate it or love it, he's him![]()
