COMMUNITY Does your city have flock cameras?

It's been a huge discussion in my area. My county and counties nearby have put up flock cameras. They're supposed to be there to get license plates and if there are crimes in the area then it's supposed to help police but people feel it's a huge invasion of privacy and very Big Brother

There are lawsuits

You can find out if they're in your area

Never heard of flock cameras.

But I've always assumed that all cities have been under some kind of video surveillance for years.

how is this different from traffic cameras that can send you tickets for running red lights n shit. Havent those been in place for decades now?

A lot of municipalities have removed them. From what I just read, there's only 18 states and DC with them nowadays and there's always been legal/constitutional challenges against them.

Oh ok. Explain then? Because that's the vibe I was getting from you mainly
Ijs I understand it from both sides

For what I just paid for this house or rather the loan I got for it, I'm not trying to have no one take my shit or break into it. I also speak from a place of privilege cause I do not live in an area that is prone to crime, which was very intentional among other things I wanted in a new community.

But I would still like to know who took my shit in the event of a burglary and I'm gonna press charges. The sooner they can identify a suspect the better

But everyone can't live where I live. Or maybe they can't afford a decent security camera setup. There's always gonna be a trade off for things in the name of safety imo

Im not with the surveillance shit at all but if we being honest with ourselves.. between home security systems(ring, eufy, nest), cellphones, car cameras..laptops and tablets... companies and the govt already got access to all that shit

I mean you're talking about different types of surveillance though. Home surveillance for protecting your property vs surveillance with driving down the street or walking the sidewalks

I've seen this comment a lot. The whole why do you care if you're getting spied on by something else

So because those spy then who cares if another thing gets added

dont misunderstand my sentiment. Im not asking why do you care. I care as well. Im just pointing out that the shit is already happening

Ok a lot of people on here dont seem to know what these things are doing, so imma break down what i learned as simple as i can.

  • Flock cameras are reading plates and taking pictures of every vehicle that drives by. AI is looking through it and noting the make, model of car as well as unique characteristics. The this data is uploading to cloud to a network.

  • All of this data is fed through Palantir's AI and is also developing a profile of you.

  • They give Law Enforcement access to this data without a warrant.

  • Its not end-to-end encryption as they claim it is and they still hold the backdoor keys. Prone to hacking and access portals have been left unsecure

  • They say they dont sell your data, but as people have pointed out, they sell subscriptions to a service. So if you buy the subscriptions, you basically buy access to that data they've gathered from all over. In the contract it also says they reserve the right to share your data with whoever they want to

  • People have pointed out that Palantir having access (were a primary investor too) means they're absolutely selling your data

  • People have expressed some concern these cameras are popping up on hiking/biking trails

  • Their CONDOR cameras dont track cars, but people

Yea I don't know how it's legal. Probably why a lot of lawsuits

I've seen people saying they're voting for whoever gets that shit out of their city
