So my middle daughter was here for the weekend. While she was here I had her record vocals so she could see what she sounds like and where she's got problems with her vocals 'cause she needs to record an audition for a gig she's trying to land. She's using Rilo Kiley's "I Never" and "The Lookout" by Sarah Harmer for the audition. The phrase "you're flat" was said more times in that recording session than any other time I've ever sat behind a board. To be fair, this is the first time she's ever heard her voice recorded with decent equipment instead of her phone or tablet, and I could fix the pitch problems if I wanted to, but she's got to get it right without relying on stuff like that. I told her she needs to develop breath control and to stop trying to sing like the artist who's song she's singing and start singing like herself, in her range, and that will make a huge difference.
She definitely has raw talent, but has not developed the skill yet.
