OPINION Do you believe Vito knew Carlo had a hand in Sonny's murder and...

The punishment of keeping Fredo in exile should have been enough since Fredo wasn't intelligent enough to do anything.Giving the fact he knew nothing of the plot to kill Michael he should have got a pass and kept his life.

I'm kinda confused at this question, because Vito and Michael knew Carlo set Sonny up for yrs.

Vito just didn't want to make his daughter a widow and left it to Michael to do once he died.

When Michael got carlo killed,it was because of beating his sister and Sonny's death.

I'm pretty sure he knew. Sonny was killed rushing out of the house to beat Carlo. And he knew Barzini had masterminded it but he was still recovering from the assassination attempt (+ now the stress of his eldest dying) and likely wanted to be 100% before he retaliated.

I ask the question because, as you see by the responses, their are plenty of people that believe that Vito did not know

I personally believe Vito knew but never said anything especially to Michael.....If you watch the Godfather 2, one of things Michal said was he learned from his father to think like other people

Vito trained Michael and was able to ascertain that Barzini was behind the war just by being in his presence at the meeting....there is no way in hell Vito couldn't have put two and two together to figure out that Carlo was involved.....but the difference between Michael and Vito was Vito greatly valued his family while Michael was more concerned with business and legacy

Vito would have never made his daughter a widow

Well yes I think he knew, and I think he knew he was old and wouldn't be around.

He guided Michael into doing what needed to be done once he died.

lol

Was actually watching the Godfather marathon on Paramount yesterday.

Not only do I think Vito didn't know..............but I don't think he paid Carlo any mind either way.

I doubt he was even on Vito's radar as a threat.

During that meeting he had after he recovered, it seemed like he just chalked it up to the cost of doing business.

Basically, to him it didn't matter who did it..........it just mattered that he lost his son.

At that point, he was more interested in protecting Michael and bringing him back home safely more than anything else.

This whole meeting was an act just to see who really betrayed him. It was like a year or so after this where Michael was finally able to come back home and Vito was able to take him under his wing and train him to be Godfather. He figured it was michaels destiny after him killing the cop and sonny being murdered with no one to take the family business.
So really, it took years for Vito and Michael to plan all those hits at once, Carlo included. Vito would never just let Carlo set sonny like that. They insinuate that during those few years after sonnys murder, that they had Carlo thinking he was moving up in the family. That was all set up by Michael and Vito.

The movie doesn't really do Vito much justice. If you all read the book, you will know just how far ahead of the game that Vito actually was. Once I read the book it filled in a lot of the blanks on why Vito made some of the moves he did in the movie. The book covers so many more details that movie leaves out.

Yall are right that he wouldn't have killed Carlo but he also knew how much of a bitch Carlo was which is why he said give Carlo a meaningless job where he knew nothing and could tell nobody nothing about the family business. Keep his daughter happy but neutralize a threat to the business. Michael killing Carlo hits different to a sister than it would coming from a father. IMO its easier for a brother to deal with beefing with his sister over that than a father beefing with is daughter.

Nothing a person could about how hot headed Sonny was.

I don't know why they think Vito is dumb

Even if The Vito didn't die ,they were gonna kill everybody.

Off the strength that he was going to see Carlo, they knew something was up when he died on the way.

Vito didn't kill Carlos for beating his daughter because they told her not to marry Carlo and because they try to stay out of married couple's business.

Killing Sonny was a whole other thing. That's personal and mafia shit.

I might have to check out the book then.

Simply because the movie doesn't go into that level of detail.

I always thought about if they remade the movie. On one hand, the movie is incredible. The acting and the way scenes were shot and all that. Fire. But on the other hand, they could make a whole other movie based off the book shit.

I think the Hollywood part of the book would be great on screen today. Johnny Fontane and his cousin who’s name I can’t remember for shit right now. Really it could be a mini series.
