It's easy to lie or get away with these things when it's already a verdict about the defendant. I think it's more than likely that these things weren't true or very much over exaggerated for this affect. She knew more but that didn't directly involve her and that was more damaging for him so he settled. No sweat for him and she gets her money she felt entitled.
