Kanye made it cool to just be yourself.

College Dropout set a whole new sound and texture in hip-hop culture period. Saying this doesn't take anything from GKMC at all though, that album is cemented, no doubt, but it ain't in the same conversation as College Dropout.

Disagree. I think they are actually very similar in that both were innovative albums dropped at times where innovation was low.

I also think you're exaggerating how new the sound on CD is. It was different, but it borrowed more heavily from the sampling styles that came before it than some of Kanye's later work. Kanye himself said that.

MF gotta stop saying this like there wasn't artist who where themselves and were still successful

Like Tribe, Kast, Common, Souls of Mischef, Pharcyde, etc. didn't exist before Kanye

No, for sure. I'll never disregard the ones before Kanye. But how far did they take their 'cool'?

Kanye took his to whole new heights at the time where gangster/thug rap was super prominent. That's all I am saying.

Not to switch topics but for instance, rappers been using double-timing and triplet flows for decades, but Migos came thru and made it 'cool' and global.

You can't front on that.

The fact that Kanye came with something different is probably part of the reason it did so well. If he dropped the album in an era when there was more variety, it would have still been celebrated as a good album, but it wouldn't have stood out as much.

That's another thing that's needs to stop. No it wasn't.

Other than 50, Kanye dropped his first album when Bow Wow & Nelly was still hot and all that snap/ringtone rap started coming on.

Shit now that I think about even the singles that pushed 50's album wasn't some "gagster/thug rap"

It was In The Club & Candy Shop............:foh5:

Kanye dropped when 50, banks, Buck, Ja rule, roc a fella, Dipset, fat Joe, lil Jon, the lox etc was all prominent and his mainstream sound didn’t sound like any of that

homie shoulda just led with that

Love both albums but..........

Kendrick's Good kid maad city is a tad better album to me.

I still listen to a lot more songs off that album than college dropout

Full disclosure, I think Kanye is one of the most overrated artists ever. His music is legitimately good. I don't deny that, but people be walking around calling him a genius and acting like every album of his is something that hasn't been done before. I just don't see that.

On topic, I don't really think there is anything good you can say about CD that can't also be said about GKMC.

His sound was very similar to damn near half the people you named, since he did produce some tracks for them.
