At what point do you consider black wrestlers coons?

is it the gimmick alone? or is a collection of things....I was watching the Glow season 2 episode where awesome kong sonn watched her wrestler with her welfare queen gimmick for the first time.

she was telling him everything was offensive, not just her gimmick but homie still took it to heart...

great episode, great conversation.....
how do you feel about it and who do you feel is cooning and absolutely not cooning.



I've always maintained that the New Day was not cooning. I think their gimmick ma y be silly and obnoxious at times, but i don't think its cooning. they have creative freedom, and it seems more like they're being goofy and joking about a bunch of shit black folk joke about all the time, but a bunch of white folk may not get.....


but a the same time....look at the pic above.....they are very much aware of black representation in the sport....

they got Wale involved in a real segment for once...they stayed making black twitter references even if the jokes fell flat on white ears....

i would love if they did a permit patty gimmick where they started calling the cops on white wrestlers for doing regular people shit....shit would be hilarious if every time someone was doing something backstage, one of the new day popped up with a phone calling the police....i mean that's the kinda stuff they do....

i don't see it as cooning....i can see my goofy ass up there having fun right along with them...

Du I love that pic u have of them as champs. Makes me proud. And I did watch that glow episode about the son not liking his moms gimmick. I believe, like many things, labeling someone a coon is subjective. Within the last year I’ve seen people on here praise ember moon while she was on NXT and now since they found out she’s dating a white guys, she’s now known ember coon. Why? What has she done to deserve that? The rules, unfortunately, are different for us black folks. I just feel that the new day is just being themselves. While I don’t agree with some of the things they do, I enjoy seeing black being successful especially when the gimmick was garbage to begin with and they got themselves over. As long as they like it and they are having fun with it I guess
 
It's hard to judge in that kinda thing, because America is so prejudice. So for most black guys, or other ethnic groups to get in the door. They have to play a role identifiable to groups that arent knowledgeable of them.

So like with the rock, Rocky Mavia or what ever..he was the happy go lucky Samoan, then he was the down for the cause racially ambiguous guy. Then when he used those opportunities he was given. He carved out a niche that wasn't racial identifiable. It was just.."the rock"..ya mean.

So I think us as black people have to keep that in mind. I know people will sit there and say "I wouldn't so and so for so and so"..but think about it. What are you doing right now? Do you have the opportunity to be in that person's shoes?

Are you better off than that person, do you know that person personally enough to know that they are ok and willingly letting themselves be stereotyped with no plan and just wanna ride the wave?
 
I can't front, when New Day 1st came out wit their gimmick, I looked at them as dancing coons.

But then I started watchin them some and their matches, and them brothas had me rollin. Lol!

And their matches...man. You know you're talented when your matches outshined yhe the main event in a PPV...TWICE! And still continue to do it. On top of that, isnt their merchandise one of WWE's top selling merchandises?

But wrestling has always been about over the top stereotypes. Way b4 I was born. Their is line that certain things must not be crossed. Especially nowadays. B/c the #MeToo movement would've had a field day wit the WWE during the 90's.
 
What's the fine line between being a company man and a coon though?

Booker T and Mark Henry sometime teeter that line. With the new recent Hulk Hogan news Book didn't want to touch the subject and Mark basically said he'd welcome him in with open arms if he's genuine (sidenote: how can he tell if Hogan's genuine or not, it's a gut feeling smh). Are they being a company man or an outright coon?

New Day are the ones who put their gimmick together, its like others have said I dont think its cooning, its them having fun and being themselves. They even said that most of the shit they come up with is thought of when they just chilling.

R Truth is a rapper and was probably rapping before he joined WWE so why not incorporate his rapping into his gimmick? I doubt they just told that nigga to come out rapping and dancing. Its what he does so why not do it?
