Challenging Detroit's Notorious Car Impound System

This is insane and probably happens in other cities also. Anybody ever have their vehicle impounded or towed?

For decades, Detroit police, sheriff’s deputies, and Wayne County prosecutors have systematically abused the constitutional rights of drivers by using a controversial tactic called civil forfeiture to seize and sell thousands of cars—oftentimes from completely innocent owners. Now, the Institute for Justice (IJ)—a nonprofit, public interest law firm—has partnered with a group of Detroit drivers to fight back and file a class action lawsuit in federal court seeking to end the controversial practice once and for all.

I dont know how the impound shit is in NJ, but NJ got fishy ass shit going on with towing that involves cops.

Lets say your car breaks down on the highway and you pull over to the shoulder. If you call a tow truck, that mfer might charge you $100 to tow your car. But, if a cops pulls up and the cop calls the tow truck, they'll charge you $200 and give $100 to the cop/station.

Im sure shit is illegal but it goes down

I got pulled over in pulling into my apartment bout 8 years ago.

I had a warrant so they took me to jail and towed my shit from where I lived.

It cost me so much to get my vehicle out that I got behind on rent.

I told that bitch I live here look at my ID. White hoe called them folks and waited till they got there to tow and left me in the back seat until they did so I can see it.

My BM from Southfield I think. She been told me Michigan on some other shit. Believe they got some nut ass property/utility laws too.

I heard Philly is the worst city for this cause there is no cap on towing/storage fees

There’s a lot out here that’s full of towed cars. It’s at least 5-acres of cars, all of them door to door, bumper to bumper, packed like sardines. Every time I see it I think about everyone’s lives who had a wrench thrown into their gears of life; not being able to go to work, take their kids to school, go grocery shopping etc.

Predatory towing is heavy everywhere.

NYC has to be close to worst when it comes to cars getting towed too.

Cops will tow your shit and not update that it was towed in any system for like 3-4 days. The whole time you have no clue if your car was stolen or towed. The cops do nothing but tell you to keep checking the database.

Finally a bunch of days later they update the database and by then you owe them over a G for overnight fees.

Smh.

I remember that shit putting me back for $1300 when I was near the lowest point in my life financially.

There’s a wrecker/body shop in Houston called Eastex Collision.

When they tow cars from an accident they will purposely store it inside their body shop initially, because in TX you can charge $100/day for inside storage but only about $30/day for outside.

They will also have you sign a form when they do the tow. You think it’s just permission to tow but the fine print also authorizes them to do a tear down in their body shop. So they will start taking panels off your car “for inspection,” which is labor either you our your insurance gets billed for.

You can have minor damages but end up with so many fees that you can’t even get your shit back.

Also, your now disassembled car isn’t going to be reassembled for free.

This happened to an ex of mine. The fees got so high we let them keep the car cause it wasn't worth it especially wrecked.

I did find out years later that if you're in a wreck you can call have your vehicle towed to the location of your choice, you did not have to let the police or the tow company they call tow it. I made sure to tell everyone I knew cause a lot of people do not know that. The next accident my ex had we had her car towed to my dads shop. She was a horrible driver.

Yeah that's fuck ass MI for you.

I lost a 79 Monte on some bullshit like this. Ol bitch ass lady had my shit towed from outside the apartment complex on some "abandonment" shit. I'm like bitch I got 2 cars, if I don't drive one for a few days, that means I abandoned it?

The fees were so high and I was so broke (child support) that I couldn't get it back. The body was a raggedy as fuck, but I had a 350 small block with 4 barrel carb and 350 turbo trans in the bitch.

I got my Hyundai took like this in Philly.

Someone towed it to a garage lot. Not even the city joint. But a lot next to a garage.
Shit was like $70 + another $70 for each day it was there. Even when I got paid it wasn't enough an dude wasn't trying to work with me.

Dudes be basically making all profit from the sale. Just a free car to sell out the sky.

Crazy thing is dude ended up getting lit up for trying it with the wrong person.

I caught a bullshit ass ticket back in 02 and my Escort got impounded. I went downtown to call myself getting it back and them muhfuckas told me $1000 to get it back. I only paid $1000 for the fuckin car so I left it there. A couple of weeks later I was able to get my stuff out of it but they insisted I had to leave the stereo in it. I had a Sony Mobile ES deck in it with JBL speakers at the front, Orion's in the rear, and a pair of Alpine 3522 amps that I had owned since '93 running my speakers and I lost all of that shit.

This is very long overdue.

My cousin got a DUI and they took his challenger. He didn't have enough money to get it out right away because him and his goofy ex wife just had a baby. When he finally got the money together i think after a month in a half he found out they sold that his shit.
