Can A Low Volume Artist Be Ranked The Same As A High Volume Artist?

5 Grand

Old School Godfather
Melle Mel
Rakim
Notorious BIG
Lauryn Hill
Jay Electronica
Mos Def
Andre 3000

^^^Can these artists be compared and contrasted with

LL Cool J
Run DMC
KRS One
2Pac
Nicki Minaj
Jay Z
Nas

Is Lauryn Hill better than Nicki Minaj based on talent alone?

Or is Nicki better because her discography is 10X bigger? More records sold, longevity, etc.

How about Big vs Pac? In the same span of time 2 Pac produced 3X as much material. Maybe more.

Son how did you even come up with this list??

I say, in the end, talent and great marketing always wins regardless of the amount of albums made or sold

lmao @ tryna sneak melle mel in there
Mel was the original GOAT, but he got knocked out the box based on the subject of this thread. F5 as a crew only been together for 5 years... and Mel been in and out for a decade or so with a cpl songs and albums here and there. The game evolved without him, but his contributions in those 5 years are just enough to at least keep him in the convo.

Biggie and Lauryn prove you can yes.

Kendrick a legend after 3 major label releases. Snoop, Nas, 50all were certified after their debuts. So, yeah plenty of examples.

So basically you can be "top 5 dead or alive with only 1 LP"?

I'd say yeah. But it's a quality vs quantity argument for me in some cases. Pac put out more but the bulk of that shit was microwave music. Big 2 LPS still hit hard as 85% of pac FOR ME. But the like of Jay elect shouldn't be mentioned with them. His pen cool but a focused mos def can match him. Hell skyzoo laps him FOR ME.

Had The DOC never released anything other than "No One Can Do It Better" he'd definitely be top 5 for the west coast on the strength of that one album. Shit, to this day there's very little that's been released out west that can even be in the same discussion with that one album.

It’s reverse but BIG KRIT is a better artist and has a better discography than Kendrick.

Jay said he had Illmatic on bootleg, yeah Nas was ahead of time. We can say that Illmatic is the bible of hip hop. Like Thriller for Pop. Nas is the goat just one LP.

So ye it works.

Playing devil's advocate, when Snoop and Nas came out, there were only a handful of artists that had lengthy careers. Besides KRS, Rakim, LL Cool J, there weren't that many MCs that had an actual "discography". Maybe 2 or 3 albums, but circa 93/94 there wasn't anybody with 10 albums.

Closest would be Too $hort with 8 albums by 94. Fat Boys had 7, BDP had 5 unless you count the live joint then it's 6 but you could also add KRS One's "Return of the Boom Bap" and you're at 6 or 7, and BDK had 6 by '94.

Why is Mos in the first list? He got 5 solo's and a group album
