I think that there's a rabbit hole we fall down over time when attempting to evaluate mental conditions.

White people do terrible things and are deemed mentally ill. Exceptions to a broader population of white people who are presumed to be incapable of such actions.

Black people are deemed terrible indiscriminate of their mental state. Not far from a point in time when all black people were assumed to be naturally mentally lacking, thus their terrible actions were a natural conclusion given the fact that they were black.

Black people are the rule. White people are the exception to the rule. This is the basis of racist psychology. I hate to beat a dead bush here but I think even trying to theorize this guy's mental state is more damaging then not mentioning his mental state at all.

And what we are doing is media. Social media in its most base terminology. Information spread verbally from person to person. I'm not saying this thread or this site will be weaponized to protect that guy, obviously not. But enough people in enough places doing what is being done here can have an effect.
