I remember Illaselph Halflife came out in 1996 and was a low key classic (it didn't have any club bangers but you'd be crazy to give it anything less than 5 mics) in the summer of 99 there was a big hype for Things Fall Apart as that was their next album. Also Rahzel released an album around that time.

At the time there was a dichotomy between Puff Daddy, Jay Z, DMX and The Roots, Black Star, Common, etc.

At the end of the day it was all good music. Just different sides of the same coin.
