How is this clout chasing? He's always had it set so that his fortune would go to help the public when he died. He's just changing it so that it goes out now. His foundation has been helping impoverished nations. Are you faulting him for deciding not to wait until his death before giving the money away to people who need it? I didn't read the article, but I'm betting this is prompted by the Trump administration's bullshit. I saw Gates talking about how the changes Trump made was making it harder for his charity to help people. I'm guessing he just decided doing this would be easier than trying to battle Trump.
A lot of these billionaires use their charities to give themselves a positive image and make money off their supposed charity, so I wouldn't put anything past Gates. That said, I don't really see how this move could be anything but good for the people he's giving the money to.
