OPINION Better 3rd Album?

Saw this on Twitter and wanted to see what yall opinion was.


For me it’s Muddy Waters and it’s no contest. I revisit that album all the time. Way more than Vol 2. And imo it’s miles and miles better. From the song placement, beats, lyrics even the skits. Reggie did that on that album.
 
Fuuuuuk 2 of my favorite albums ever. But muddy waters gets the dub from me. It's my favorite album only 2nd to it was written which is only 2nd to muddy waters😅😅
 
Vol. 2 was the first album I thought of when I saw the title. Muddy Waters obviously, but I didn't think Redman got that much love these days and Jay's late 90s run was stupid.

And Aquemini might be the best 3rd album ever.

I bought Vol2 the day it came out. Shit had next to zero replay value. I can't even tell you the last time I've listened to it. GWB was prolly still in office. Meanwhile all the rest of those albums I've listed have been played at least twice since the beginning of this year.

Gang Starr's first two joints were meh as fuck, especially the first one. I bought the first album on the strength of the Manifest video and was wildly disappointed. Back then I legit thought them dudes might get one more terrible album then disappear. 2nd joint showed great potential but I still wasn't feelin it. It wasn't until Daily Operation that I really fucked with 'em.

Cosign on that Manifest single. The way he was rapping on that song made me think he was gonna be something special. And the scratches on that song were crazy too.

But that album wasn't completely produced by DJ Premier. There were a few songs on there before Premiere joined the group and you could tell they were just finding their style. The second album was much better.

I remember when Hard to Earn and Jeru's album came out around the same time. That's when you knew Premier figured it out. In fact, I remember there was a lull in Hip Hop, a dry spell. Then Enter The Wu: 36 Chambers and Midnight Marauders came out on the same day in November, and Doggystyle came out either a week before or a week after. Then Hard To Earn, The Sun Rises In The East and Illmatic dropped that spring. 92/93 was kinda weak imo, but a whole gang or records dropped in late 93/early 94.

Might be part of the problem. The attempt to crossover bothered a lot of people, similar issue to It Was Written. Basically it wasnt Reasonable Doubt 3.

Obviously you can't please everybody, but is it better to stick to what you are good at, or is it better to try new things? Seems like most artists come into the industry with one style, and then when they blow up they go commercial. You'd have a hard time naming artists that had a distinct style and didn't go commercial by their third or fourth album.
