Best Hip Hop Song In 1988 Tournament (Preliminaries)

Honorable mention

Loosey's Rap - Rick James feat Big Daddy Kane and Roxanne Shante.

There were so many dope songs and albums in the summer of 88 but Bug Daddy Kane came out of nowhere and shut down the whole summer.

Not only did he drop his album, which was 4.5 mics (I can't give it 5 mics because Rakim was a better lyricist and It Takes a Nation of Millions was more creative productionwise) but he was on The Symphony, which was on Marley Marl's album and Loosey's Rap (remix) which was the b-side of a Rick James 12".

Technically, Goin Back To Cali was on the Less Than Zero Soundtrack (along with Bring The Noise by Public Enemy) which came out in 1987. The 12" with Jack The Ripper came out in early 1988.

Having said that;

The soundtrack came out in 1987.

The 12" single came out in 1988.

The album came out in 1989,

So what year would you say Goin Back To Cali should be?

Do you guys realize in 1988 I was a freshmen/sophomore in high school and I used to stay up on the weekends and tape the college radio shows. I knew every rap song that came out. I could probably name 100 songs from 1988.

Asking me to narrow it down to 3 is tough but I can do it.

1. The Posse Is Large - MC La Kim

2. The Symphony (album version)

3. Talkin All That Jazz - Stetsasonic.

Agreed, in '88 I was a sophomore/junior in high school. The summer of '88, right after sophomore year ended, I got my first job. With my first paycheck, I walked over to this record store around the way on 9 mile and picked up a copy of "Follow The Leader" After that I bought albums and singles left and right 'cause there was so much good shit coming out that year.
