BATON ROUGE, La. - The 18-year-old son of Alton Sterling has been accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old boy this weekend.

According to arrest documents from the Baton Rouge Police Department, the incident happened on Dec.8. at a Baton Rouge home. Documents say the child told investigators that Cameron Sterling pulled him into a bedroom, locked the door and raped him.

The report said the child's mother questioned Sterling who told her that nothing had happened. Sterling did allegedly tell her that he was having a mental episode.

Sterling was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of first-degree rape.

Cameron Sterling's father, Alton Sterling, was fatally shot by a police officer outside a Baton Rouge convenience store in 2016.

Son of Alton Sterling charged with rape of juvenile

BATON ROUGE - The son of Alton Sterling, a man killed by a former Baton Rouge Police officer, has been charged with rape after he allegedly sexually assaulted a juvenile.

Police were called to a local hospital on December 9 to investigate. There, detectives learned that 18-year-old Cameron Sterling allegedly raped the 8-year-old victim while two other children were at the residence.

The victim later told authorities that Sterling had forcibly performed a sex act on him against his will.

When questioned about the incident, Sterling initially denied touching the child. Sterling's mother told police that her son is diagnosed with severe depression and bi-polar disorder and believed he may have had a "mental episode."

Sterling was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of first-degree rape.

Cameron Sterling has bond set at $100K after accusation he raped 8-year-old

A state judge set bail at $100,000 Friday for Alton Sterling's 18-year-old son, who is accused of raping an 8-year-old boy last weekend while babysitting the child.

Cameron Sterling is being held in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Prosecutor Larry McAlpine told District Judge Don Johnson during a hearing Friday that Sterling might have mental health issues and that Sterling will be evaluated soon by a prison psychiatrist. The purpose of that evaluation, Sterling’s attorneys said, is to determine whether Sterling needs treatment, and to what degree.

Dedrick Moore, one of Sterling's lawyers, said the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's Office is amenable to revisiting the bail amount if it is determined that Sterling should be sent to a mental health facility for treatment.

Ron Haley Jr., who also represents Sterling, said outside the courtroom that the first order of business “is to get him help.” Sterling, he said, had been diagnosed previously with mental health issues.

“Given his mental health condition, jail is not where he needs to be,” Haley said, adding it was too early to comment on the first-degree rape charge.

An arrest warrant says Sterling took the child into a bedroom, locked the door and raped him. Sterling denied anything happened when the child’s mother questioned him, the warrant states, but Sterling also told the woman he had some type of episode at the time.

Alton Sterling's 18-year-old son incompetent to stand trial, judge rules

Alton Sterling's 18-year-old son, who is accused of raping an 8-year-old boy while babysitting the child in December, is currently not competent to stand trial, a state judge ruled Thursday.

District Judge Don Johnson, who had appointed three doctors to examine Cameron Sterling, issued his ruling after reviewing their reports.

Prosecutor Larry McAlpine and one of Sterling's attorneys, Dedrick Moore, said there is a consensus among the doctors that Sterling is not competent to proceed to trial, but the doctors believe his competency can be restored.

Johnson ordered Sterling transferred from East Baton Rouge Parish Prison to a state mental facility in Jackson for treatment. The judge will review Sterling's progress in August.

Sterling was booked in December on first-degree rape. He has not been formally charged by a grand jury or prosecutors. Johnson on Thursday stayed the criminal case.
