Mayor Purzycki Announces Details of Wilmington’s 5th Annual HBCU Week and College Fair
September 17, 2021

Since 2017, participating HBCUs have granted over 3,000 admission opportunities to local students and have awarded more than $18.5 million in scholarships

Mayor Mike Purzycki and Wilmington’s HBCU Ambassador, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, today announced details of Wilmington’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week [hbcuweek.org] activities, which includes both an in-person and virtual HBCU College Fair to take place over two days. HBCU Week begins Sunday, September 26 and will continue through Saturday, October 3. The presenting sponsors of the 2021 HBCU Week are the City and Barclays.

This year, 56 HBCUs and 10 corporations will participate, enabling students to engage with college recruiters and corporate partners one-on-one to discuss admission, scholarships, and internships.

HBCU Week was launched by Ashley Christopher in 2017, under the leadership of Mayor Mike Purzycki, to expose local high school students to the history, pride, and academic offerings of these colleges and universities, and to encourage young people to reach a new level of educational achievement. Since 2017, Mayor Purzycki and Mr. Smith noted that participating HBCUs have granted over 3,000 admission opportunities to local students and have awarded more than $18.5 million in scholarships.

“HBCU Week has been extremely successful because of an outpouring of support for our students who crave more educational opportunities,” said Mayor Purzycki. “Each year we’ve expanded the program to include a concert, panel discussions, the HBCU Battle of the Bands, and – the highlight of the week – a College Fair that has grown into two-day, in-person as well as virtual event.

Stephen A. Smith and Earvin “Magic” Johnson brought national prominence to HBCU Week in 2019 for which we will be forever grateful. Our 5th year will see us return to in-person events while observing the latest CDC guideline, staying mindful that we are not out of the pandemic just yet. Nevertheless, we look forward to an energetic and productive week for everyone involved.”

On a personal note, I've been to HBCU back in Wilmington, especially the Battle of the Bands. Wilmington back on the come up, and the DSU Alumni definitely put on for the city.

Plans underway to reopen Michigan’s only historically Black college

(WXYZ) — Plans are underway to reopen Michigan’s only HBCU.

The PENSOLE Lewis College of Business is the brainchild of Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder of the PENSOLE Design Academy in Oregon, and a stockholder of the previously closed HBCU in Detroit, Lewis College of Business.

Pending state legislation and government redesignation, the school will become the first HBCU to focus on design in the United States, according to a press release.

Serious question

How many of you that attended an HBCU actually pay your alumni fees or give back as a regular contribution to your HBCU?

Full disclaimer, i dont give shit back to the PWI i graduated from, so this isnt a gotcha question. I have a followup question as well

I do. I’m in the Alumni Association, and I pretty much lead the Band Alumni.

Okay two points. While I think the attention, money and football accomplishments he has brought to Jackson State is 👍🏾 👌🏾 great. I mean if the football program can bring in students I am all for that.

And if your not aware of what waves PrimeTime is making at Jackson here are some reference articles

Now all that is great 👍🏾right. My side eye comes with these commercials😑 Deion did. This some yessa master type commercial. Like why he got the girls dancing and like performing for that old ass Nick Saban. Oh and the one with the gold chain...like wtf. While yes HBCU football is about the band and the dancers too. I just don't like how it look with the black folks performing for a old white man

Watch all the clips

Shout out to HBCUs getting love on national TV today.

You got the college football's Celebration Bowl of JSU vs SC State on ABC, and something called the Legacy Classic of college basketball with has my HORNETS vs NC Central on TNT. (Del State is down right now)

Seems like the public is now taking interest in seeing HBCUs get major shine outchea.

my oldest daughter is gonna be in Hampton’s pre college program this summer.
She went on a visit last month during an AAU Vball tourney and loved it. Hampton is her top choice right now am Im beyond excited…I wanted her to go to an HBCU since me and her mother both went to AAMU
