Marcus Moziah Garvey, born August 17, 1887 (Jamaica) was the world’s first, important Black Nationalist leader. He is responsible for the Universal Negro Improvement Association (largest black secular organization in African American history), the Black Star Line (international shipping company), and the Negro World newspaper. His goal was to organize black communities (urban and modern) and improve the justice system, wealth, and the well-being of the black race as a whole. He adopted and utilized ideas of Pan-Africanists to achieve these goals. Garvey is most well-known for creating modern societies for Africa and ending imperialist rule.
