What determines getting your jersey retired?

when other players pass will they get their jerseys retired?

@Sony Montana has a valid point. I’m pretty sure some of the older Hall of FAMERS are feeling a way about his number being retired throughout the league and not other greats.

I have infinite amount of respect for Mr. Russell and can understand why they are doing this but I can also understand why some would look at it odd too.

what about guys who have the same jersey numbers? Like in the case of Kareem..what about Larry bird? Or does bird not deserve that honor? Doctor J?
