Idk anymore. I don't think he's a bad coach or the team is as bad as they look. I think he has a loyalty problem that causes issues more than anything. For example, we have 4 rbs that he tries to rotate all game but only 1 (Haskins) is proving to be consistent but he has to share carries. Our DC is great against lesser teams but up against equal or better talent he gets destroyed and Harbaugh keeps him around.

We have had a lot of 4 and 5 star recruits transfer during his tenure and we still don't know what happened with our 1 returning qb prior to the season so it may be a culture issue up there.

I think if your extension rumor is true it's for recruiting purposes but to answer your question, idk who replaces him. The fans want Matt Campbell, Luke fickell, nick Sheridan and even to take a shot at Urban (but there's a rumor he's heading to Texas)
