'Nobody really cares': Jimmy Garoppolo and Richard Sherman dismiss Nick Bosa's old tweets
The old tweets of San Francisco 49ers rookie Nick Bosa have been a hot topic of conversation since the 49ers drafted Bosa with the second-overall pick in last month's NFL Draft, but two of Bosa's most prominent teammates do not believe his political views will be an issue going forward.
Cornerback Richard Sherman, who has been very outspoken on race and social issues in the past, said earlier this week that Bosa's old tweets are irrelevant as long as he performs on the field, and is a good teammate off the field.
"One thing about football is that nobody really cares what you say if you can play," Sherman told the Sacramento Bee Monday. "At the end of the day, I think a guy that has played with African Americans his whole life, not saying he can't be racist, but they know how to maneuver around African Americans."
Sherman added that he doesn't believe any other teammates will find Bosa's old tweets — in which he called Colin Kaepernick a "clown," Beyonce's music "complete trash," and Black Panther the "worst Marvel movie" — a problem going forward.
"It's not like something where guys are like, 'Hey man, what about what you said?' No. No. If he can play, he can play. If he can't play, he won't be here," Sherman said. "But at the end of the day, that's all that matters in football. Is he getting sacks on Sunday? Is he helping our team? Is he being a good teammate? Those are things that matter. Now, if he's a bad teammate, that's something we'll address."
On Thursday, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also said that Bosa's tweets and political views will not be an issue.
"Not in the locker room, those type of things aren't even discussed," Garoppolo told Fox Business. "Once you get into the facility, it's all about football, it's all about being a good teammate and putting the team first."
A number of prominent activists and commentators wondered whether Bosa's political views would be a potential issue in the locker room, but, from the sounds of things, it may not even come up.
I think the giants are gonna regret not drafting dude. I think he is gonna be a star.
Daniel Jones best case scenario is Case Keenum
