Breaking News 179 People Presumed Dead in South Korea Plane Crash

They have video of a purported bird strike but my question then is, why was the landing gear up? Even if hydraulics failed (they shouldn't have), there should be a system to allow gravity to drop the gear.

My thoughts are with their loved ones. Terrible way to go.

And how would the hydraulic system move out the way for the manual release?

What keeps them locked in place if not the hydraulic system?

Probably some kind of weight on wheels switch (H-60’s & other planes have em). Once the sensor detects the plane is off the ground it’s activated & the wheels are locked in.

It's triple redundant, I really do not think there was a hydraulic failure.

In the cabin there should be a handle that will decouple the landing gear from the hydraulic system and the uplocks. A spring should then engage the downlocks once gravity does its thing.

Hmmm… I need to see a schematic.

Not that I don’t believe y’all I just need to see how it functions so I can wrap my brain around it

Nah he right.

Most, if not all, planes still have a manual override in case the automation isn't working.

But a bird strike to the engine is gonna cause the hydraulic system to fail unless that bird strike made the engine completely explode and destroy the hydraulic system in the wings.

Just a series of bad luck just based on what we know. gear deployment failed, they thentried manually deploying the landing gear that failed. Bird Shot on the 2nd landing attempt and because it was a short run way the pilots used up to much on the 2nd approach which is why they hit the wall.
