Because they are ball dominant players that aren't good enough scorers and distributors to justify them having the ball in their hands so they can take their pull up middy's.
You see how DeRozan career has went. He's a journeyman scorer because he isn't good enough for a team to keep him.

People misunderstand the midrange shot. Great offensive players are encouraged to take the midrange shot because defenses are designed to take away the rim and the 3.
Nobody opposes Luka and Shai taking the midrange shot because they are going to have the ball in their hands, putting pressure on the defense. And they are really really great at isolation and pull up middys.
People like seeing Anthony Edwards take midrange shots and he's not even on Shai or Luka level of an offensive threat. He's closer to Devin Booker.
