I didn't do a deep dive on this but I do share your sentiment that just because you have a black parent which genetically makes you black, means nothing if you are not on code with the plight of black people

It’s facts but as someone who lives in New York, you’d be surprised at how the lightest, brightest Puerto Ricans will be outside with the kente print, raising their kids like Panther Cubs and just generally being being Proud to be black and the dark ones be flippant or “i don’t see race” types.
