You think it's reasonable to turn this down in this condition???

I think it's reasonable to turn down anything that you don't want. Might not be reasonable to turn it down and expect them to go get something else. Or turn it down and expect your parents to keep driving you around.

But reasonable to turn down? Of course it's reasonable to turn it down.

Before I react to anything someone says or does, I try to ask myself 'Has this person done something WRONG to me?'. Not something I just don't like. Or think they shouldn't have done. etc, etc. Are they WRONG?

I don't think the girl did or said anything wrong. She feels how she feels. She explained exactly why she feels the way she feels. She did it respectfully.

I'd just tell her 'Ok, well I'm sorry you don't like the car. But...that's your car. You don't have to drive it if you don't like it or don't want to. I respect it.I'ma go ahead and put the keys over here in the drawer. If you ever decide you want to go anywhere, you know where to find them.'

She can drive that bitch or not drive it. That's her decision. But it's either that, the bus, or them feet.

And I don't have a problem with any of that.

If the car runs, is clean in the inside and has a fairly straight body, and reasonably mechanically sound, what difference does it make if it's 20, 30, or 40 years old???

Seriously, this is 32 years old

This one is 30 years old, pull up with this, leather intact and all and it's a problem???

Like I said, 1993, my then 19 year old was HAPPY to get the 1993 Taurus we gave her. Damn car was a year older than she was at the time and it didn't matter. What mattered was that she had a car and could get around without getting a ride from us or one of her friends.

The first words in my initial post said that I agree the teenager is being ungrateful. But also...what do you expect from most teenagers? They want new shit or at the very least something they don't consider embarrassing and most teens would consider a 20-30 year old car embarrassing to drive. I think it's far more unreasonable to pretend to like something just to appease somebody else.

Also as much talk as there's been about tue entitlement of the kid there's also entitlement on the parents part and most responses in this thread. Just because you gift something to someone doesn't mean they HAVE to like it. They have their own feelings, likes and wants so gifting somebody something you want for them doesn't mean they gotta accept it. They are also within their right to say "Nah I don't like this."

Parents often do this thing where they think their child has to like everything they do for them while forgetting their kids are actual human beings who at some point develop their own set of wants and needs. And sometimes something a parent gives doesn't actually fulfill that and that's ok sometimes. Your kid don't gotta like everything you do for them or give them.

Bruh, when I was 16, this was supposed to be my first car:

Same color and everything. I did NOT want that bitch 'cause it was big as shit and old as fuck in my eyes (19 years old to be exact). Me and my stepfather drove it home 100 miles from Saginaw to Detroit and parked it in the driveway behind the house and got to working on it. Every time he was like "this is gonna be your car" I would just cringe at the thought, but I kept those thoughts in my head. The one thing I never did was appear ungrateful to have been GIVEN a car for free. I was gonna bounce that car everywhere I needed to go, and when college came around the plan was to sell it so I could get something I wanted.

I ain't even saying they gotta like it, but damn... appreciate the fact that you got a ride now. You ain't gotta like it to roll in that bitch. I'm pretty sure my homie with the Chevy LUV pickup truck with the entire floorboard rusted out so badly that he had to put sheetmetal down or hist was straight Flintstone status didn't actually like that car. In fact, he used to say how much he hated it, but his pops gave it to him for free, so that's what he bounced. Had another homie with a Chrysler Cordoba. Nothin but problems and every time something popped up he was always on a rant about how much he couldn't stand that car. But his moms gave it to him for free so he rolled in it. Nobody got a dope ride for that first car. You got something that maybe you didn't like, but you rolled that shit anyways until the wheels fell off or until you were in a position to buy your own car.

The difference here is this girl flat out said she don't want the car.

You and dad drive nice cars I was expecting a nice car as well.

That line right there is why I say it's ungrateful and entitled. Children are indeed their own people and people can be ungrateful and entitled. I loved my first car. 10+ year old Infiniti but it was clean. Did not love paying for premium gas as a teenager, though.

And she's entitled to not want something she doesn't like. Just because other people choose to use something they don't like and/or want doesn't mean everybody else does too. Like I said just because somebody is gifted and something don't mean they gotta like it and/or use and want it. If you're thirsty and somebody hands you a Sprite but you don't drink sodas you gonna drink it anyway just because they gave it to you? Or you gonna ask for you actually want?

YES!!!

You goddamned right I'mma take it and drink that shit if I'm thirsty!!! I'm grateful a muhfucka is handing me something out of the goodness of their heart! Fuck I look like turning my nose up at a Sprite and I'm outchea thirsty!!!???

Asking for what you want isn't always turning your nose up at something. It's simply saying "I don't want that...I want this instead." Especially if you actually can get what you want by speaking up. And that's a lesson that should always be taught.

I mean there's a larger lesson of teaching your kid to not accept shit they don't want and not short changing themselves as well wrapped into this. And as a parent at some point instead of screaming how ungrateful the kid is just accept they don't want what you gave them so that's just that. Especially if they aren't disrespectful when they let you know. But immediately going to denigrating the kid simply because they don't like a gift is over the top.

Do you think parents are obligated to buy their child a vehicle?

Seems fake and that car is a bucket. Could of got a newer car for the same price

The difference a newer car makes is safety. In 2024, you'd buy a 30 year old honda, with 30 year old crash technology for you teenager thats a new driver, just to prove a dumb point? Only safety feature those have were airbags that were known to deploy really hard and could break you nose when they come out.

You could buy a cheap 2010 civic thats almost 15 years old, thats wayyy safer than some 90s bullshit. That car will have multiple airbags, safety sensors & crumple zones to help you survive a crash. Teens are new inexperienced drivers and you're putting them on the road with a lot of new bigger cars and giant suv's/trucks. If those type if vehicle's hit new cars, theres a good chance you could get hurt. Now think what will happen when they hit a 30 year old car thats light on safety.

This is a point I didn't see anyone else consider.

It's also very telling when a parent thinks their kid gotta go through certain struggle shit just because they did. "I had a 10 year old car so you gotta get a 20 year old car and like it"

That's a 12 year difference. You know that damn Buick older than 12 years old lol
Which also means parts should be easy to find.

Also that Volvo’s seat warmers had a short where it would shock you in the ass.

One day the speaker wire melted and the plastic popped onto my leg.

But it was a fucking tank. Got rear ended once by a lebaron. Got out saw the other car was fucked all the way up, looked at my shit and only saw a scuff mark on top of the bumper. Looked like a cigarette was left to burn on it. I looked at dude and said “your shits fucked up mines fine I’m finna dip”

What point is being proven??? Who's even trying to prove some vague, mystery point you've made up in your head???

Also, here's a list of the most common injuries from airbag deployment, from 2022:

  1. Facial injuries including bruising and fractures to the small bone due to the impact of the airbag
  2. Chest injuries including heart injuries due to the impact of the airbag against the chest
  3. Burns on the chest, hands, arms, or face when the fabric of the airbag moves along the skin
  4. Fractures including to the skull, ribs, and wrist bones
  5. Traumatic brain injuries
  6. Eye injuries from chemical irritation or from the pressure of the airbag
  7. Ear trauma, including hearing loss
  8. Internal bleeding if organs are damaged by airbag deployment
  9. Asthma attacks and other respiratory issues due to the chemicals involved in deployment
  10. Injury to the fetus in pregnant women
You ain't proving what you think you are. Airbags are STILL dangerous. Possibly even moreso because you now have multiple airbags deploying in a collision, therefore are now exposed to more points of impact. Shrapnel flying from the deployment is STILL a problem in 2024 just as much as it was in 1994 so where are you going with this???

BTW, a decent 2010 Civic is $4000-$5000 in somewhat roadworthy condition with issues that still need to be repaired. That shit ain't cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
