New York Woman Vomited Blood After Drink At Dominican Republic Resort Where 3 Americans Died

A Brooklyn woman is claiming she vomited blood after drinking a beverage from her hotel room’s mini bar in the Dominican Republic.

She says it was at the same resort where three American tourists died last month, reports CBS2’s Reena Roy.

Awilda Montes believes her 7UP bottle was actually filled with bleach when she was on vacation.

She initially thought it might’ve been some kind of accident or mix up, but now with the recent news of three people dying at the same resort, this could be something criminal

It was supposed to be a romantic getaway with her boyfriend at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville Resort last October.

Just a few hours into Montes’ vacation she was rushed to the hospital.

“You finally get those days off you look forward to and something like this will happen?” said Montes. “You just don’t expect this.”

She says it all started when she opened a bottle of 7UP from her hotel room’s mini bar. She noticed it didn’t have fizz and assumed it was simply flat, but quickly tasted what she believed was bleach.

“I was cautious when I took a gulp of it,” said Montes. “I immediately felt it burn me, burn my mouth, burn my tongue.

“My mouth was on fire,” she said. “When I spit it out in bathroom sink it was blood. I was just irrigating my mouth.”

The hotel staff brought her to a local clinic where doctors treated her for the pain and vomiting.

Montes says the resort apologized, offering upscale dinner reservations and a couples’ massage.

The resort is where three American tourists were found dead last month: 41-year-old Miranda Schaup-Werner collapsed and died after also drinking a beverage from the mini bar, according to her family.

Five days later, a Maryland couple were found unresponsive in their room at a sister hotel in the same resort. They showed no signs of violence, and relatives say they were healthy.

“At the time I didn’t think it was done deliberately,” Montes said about her experience. “Until I saw the news and realized there has to be some kind of correlation with what happened to me and what happened to them.

“I believe these people were poisoned,” she said. “I would’ve been poisoned had I not held it in my mouth and spit it (out) because it took effect really fast.”

In a statement, the resort claims Miranda Schaup-Werner died of a heart attack. A family spokesman says she was treated for a heart issue years ago but was recently in good health.

“We don’t have any answers of what happened down there,” said neighbor Mike Saraceni.

The FBI confirms it is investigating the sudden deaths. Preliminary autopsies indicate all three had the same cause: fluid in the lungs and respiratory failure.

Resort officials tell CBS News the deaths are unrelated. CBS2 has reached out to them for information in Montes’ case and are waiting to hear back.

A tourist to the Dominican Republic suddenly became ill and died after having a drink from the hotel minibar, it has been revealed

Robert Bell Wallace died in April but his family are yet to find any answers about his sudden death.

And the next month three more tourists died.

The 67-year-old became sick and urinated blood after he had one whisky at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana.

Three other US tourists to the Caribbean country were found dead in their rooms in another hotel on the island.

Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41,from Pennsylvania, died on May 25 after she had a drink from her minibar at the Bahia Principe La Romana.

Five days later an engaged couple from Maryland, Edward Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Day, 49, were also found dead in their room.

Dominican authorities said post-mortem examinations revealed they all died of natural causes.

But the families are searching for answers.

Mr Wallace passed away while visiting the country for his step-son's wedding.

His heartbroken niece, Chloe Arnold, told Fox News : “He was fine.

“He and his wife arrived there at around midnight on April 10. On April 11 he had scotch from the minibar.

“He started feeling very sick, he had blood in his urine and stool right afterwards.”

She said a hotel doctor had checked Mr Wallace, then decided on April 13 he needed to be hospitalised. He died on April 14.

Dominican authorities have yet to give the family a cause of death, Ms Arnold said.

“We have so many questions,” she said. “We don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”

The US State Department told Fox News: “We can confirm the death of a US citizen in April 2019 in the Dominican Republic.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family for their loss.

“Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we do not have additional information to provide.”

Another woman who stayed at the Bahia Principe this week claimed that she “vomited blood” after drinking a 7-UP from her minibar.

Awilda Montes, from New York, US, believes the 7-Up she drank at the Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville resort, in the Dominican Republic, contained bleach.

Awilda initially thought it was an accident, but she now thinks she may have been spiked.

She told CBS News: "I was cautious when I took a gulp of it. I immediately felt it burn me, burn my mouth, burn my tongue. My mouth was on fire.

“When I spit it out in the bathroom sink, it was blood."

The resort apologised and offered her and her boyfriend a meal and a massage, according to reports.

In a statement on the Grupo Pinero website the company that owns the hotel said: “In regards to the two unfortunate events that took place in the Dominican Republic, and after inaccurate and false information has been spread, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts would like to express our deep respect to the authorities and the ongoing investigations.

“We reiterate our firm commitment to collaborating completely with the authorities and hope for a prompt resolution of their inquiries and actions and will not be making any further statements that may interfere with them.“The safety and comfort of our guests and staff stand at the core of our company values, and we work daily to ensure it.

“We reiterate that we completely disagree with the dissemination of false information issued publicly which threatens the image and reputation of the company and the integrity and rights of our employees and their families, reserving, where necessary, the right to take the appropriate legal action.”

Cops are investigating whether at least seven tourists who mysteriously died in the Dominican Republic were poisoned by counterfeit booze, The Post has learned.

Officials want to know who supplied the alcoholic beverages the victims drank in the minutes and hours before their deaths over the past year — and if the drinks had any dangerous chemicals in them, law enforcement sources said.

The FBI is assisting and will take blood samples from the dead back to its research center in Quantico, Va., a source said.

The Dominican government insists the fatalities are isolated incidents, while reps for both of the resorts where victims have died — the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Bahia Principe — described the deaths as simple accidents.

But most of the deaths bear similarities, as they involve apparently healthy adults — at least some of whom drank from their hotel room minibar before suddenly becoming gravely sick.

Another American Dies in the Dominican Republic: Leyla Cox, 53, Found Dead in Hotel Room

A son is desperate for answers after his mother mysteriously died while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Leyla Cox of Staten Island had traveled to the popular tourist destination on Wednesday, June 5 for her birthday and never returned, SILive.comreported.

Her son William Cox said he last spoke to his mother on June 2, just a few days before she set off.

“I called her on a Sunday and wished her a happy birthday,” William told SILive.com. “I told her I love her.”

The trip was Leyla’s second time visiting the island and as she prepared for her solo adventure, William said he and his family warned her not to go.

“My family wanted her to not go on this vacation,” William explained to SILive.com. “I truly believe if my mother was not in the Dominican Republic, she would have been alive right now.”

“With everything going on in the news right now, we think she’s a casualty of what’s been happening,” he said.

Leyla was found dead at 53 in her hotel room and according to William, the U.S. Embassy officials explained her death had been ruled as a heart attack, SILive.com reported.

“I am overwhelmed and confused and in shock,” William told the outlet. “Her birthday was on June 9 and she passed away on June 10.”

Leyla was supposed to return home on June 12.

Following her death, an autopsy was performed and William was told no toxicology report could be ordered because her autopsy showed “no red flags,” Williams told SILive.com and CBS New York.

He explained he was also told the toxicology machine was broken, CBS New York reported.

At this time, William just wants one thing — to give his mother a proper funeral.

He is currently waiting for Leyla, who worked in the radiology department at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, to be transferred from the hospital to Blandino Funeral home in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

“Once they have her, they’re going to call me, and they’re going to make arrangements with me,” William told SILive.com.

“I have to get her ashes back,” William told the outlet. “Her ultimate wish was to have her ashes spread in the Florida Keys.”

The U.S. State Department has confirmed that at least six American tourists have died while vacationing in the Dominican Republic since the summer of 2018. Some of them passed away in what appear to be bizarre — and similar — circumstances.

Yoga Teacher and Mother, 42, Dies After Being Caught in Rip Current in the Dominican Republic

A Pennsylvania woman who went out for a swim in the Dominican Republic tragically died this week after she got caught in an aggressive rip current.

With the tragedy, Surely Miller sadly joins the list of at least six American tourists who have passed away while vacationing on the Carribean island since 2018.

On Tuesday, Miller, a yoga teacher and mom of three, decided to go for a swim near coastal city Puerto Plata, Dominican Today reports.

Unfortunately, while enjoying the waters in Cabarete, Miller, 42, was swept up by a powerful marine current and carried more than two miles from the shore.

On the beach, a friend of Miller’s helplessly watched as the Pennsylvania native threw her hands in the hair and attempted to get help while she was dragged out to sea, according to the outlet.

Unfortunately, it was too late as the yoga instructor eventually vanished in the waters. Her body was recovered by a local fisherman one day later, on Wednesday, in Malecón.

Miller’s body was examined by local doctor Ruth Esther Rosario before being transported to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) in Santiago de Los Caballeros to be further examined, Dominican Todayreports.

Following the tragedy, Miller’s friends confirmed her death in a GoFundMe page, launched as an effort to provide financial support for her three sons: Dylan, 15; Mylz, 11; and Preston, 9. In less than a day, it has raised over $3,600.

“Surely has blessed so many of us with her warm healing touch and the best thing we can do for her now is [to] make sure her children are taken care of,” the GoFundMe campaign reads. “Let’s give back to Surely and help in a way she no longer can by ensuring the well being of her children.”

On the campaign’s page, many of Miller’s loved ones paid tribute to the yoga instructor with sweet notes and messages.

“The most beautiful soul I’ve ever met. Her love will live in me forever,” someone wrote, while another added, “She had such a lasting impact… We will all miss her kind loving healing energy.”

Tribe Yoga, the local yoga studio where Miller taught classes, also confirmed her passing in a post on Facebook.

In addition to sharing the sad news, Tribe Yoga announced that they would be holding an Ashtanga class — the same type of yoga Miller was trained in — to honor their “beloved friend and teacher” and “her beautiful spirit.”

Miller owned a studio named Surely Yoga in Slatington, Pennsylvania, where she taught Ashtanga, Hot Yoga and Vinyasa Flow styles, according to her website.

Her classes, which were filled with technique and alignment cues, were aimed at helping others “intelligently know and heal their bodies, and source their own power to heal through their practice,” her website reads.

In addition to teaching in Pennsylvania, Miller’s website says she studied her craft in New York, Miami, Orlando, Allentown, Washington, D.C., Dominican Republic, Tulum, Mexico and “has been to South India multiple times for intensive yoga studies.”
