Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles

In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.

Can’t even imagine this coming out next year

Also even if by some chance it did, there would be no point. People took too long to let go of PS4 and it reflected in the PS5 life cycle

PS6 won’t be that much crazier than a PS5 and at the price it would have to be it wouldn’t even make sense to get one atleast for the first 2 years

Maybe in 2029 if I didn’t build a PC by then
 
I’m not at all shocked this is being planned. I’m at that point where every game I’ve ever got on the PlayStation Store is going on an external hard drive. PC also is gonna more and more come to the forefront if Sony and possibly Nintendo goes down this path. Granted just like most things people are gonna adapt and it’ll be normal.

I always felt that PS5 was my last and it is. For the record these sorry sacks of shit sold 70 million discs last year, but make it seem like no one is buying discs anymore. Digital only is not the problem, Sony's business practices is. Steam and GOG are better digital store fronts, which is why I will be on PC when I am, done with PS5. PSN prices are insane and I do not trust Sony when it comes to the network or preserving my gaming library. If you could resell a digital code that would be a positive and if the games were cheaper due to their being no discs, but we know that is not going to happen.

Xbox will do the same. They can barely sell consoles. The console war been over and we all lost. PCMR!
