COMMUNITY Genetic/DNA Testing

I’ve been thinking about having one done to learn more about my family. Have you ever had one done? Can you share your experience?

Never had one done, but Ive always been interested. I know who my biological father is and spent a little bit of time with him getting to know him some when i was a teenager, but my mom and I left him when I was 5 so theres a lot about him and his whole side of the family that I know nothing about. It also sounds like his biological mom died when he was young so theres even more of my blood line that im clueless about. Ive always been too paranoid that I'll find out I got another kid somewhere out there or they will link me to a crime i may have done when under the influence of narcotics.

My kids mom has 2 older boys and they kept finding leg fractures on them when they were getting older. It would happen so often the doctors started a case against her and her ex but she didnt know how it kept happening. She did genetic testing and found out she has Osteogenesis Imperfecta aka brittle bone disease and the 2 older boys have it as well. Its a milder case, but it explains why they get tiny fractures from just playing around. When my son was born we did testing when he was 6 months old to confirm if he had it or not so we could get started on whatever treatment they can offer, but thankfully my son was negative for it so we dont have to worry about it. My genes won.

I did 23andme. Whole family did it. That's how we found a cousin one of my aunts put up for adoption

I don't know how the others do it but 23andme updates the ancestry composition map regularly to get more detailed

To be clear, genetic testing and DNA testing are two very different things.

DNA testing gives you information on family history/connections and gives a breakdown of what part of the world your ancestors mostly originated from

Genetic testing identifies any variants or mutations in your genes to see how susceptible you are to certain types of diseases, whether or not you have certain hereditary genes that can be passed down to your kids, checking for genetic conditions in the womb, etc.

I don't know about the others but 23andme has it all

Though a lot of it now behind a paywall when it used to be free

Nah not trying be cloned into AI or a robot 😂

Stop giving these people your DNA!!! 🤧

Yeah no thank you

Seems like a snitch hotline and a way to harvest/share/store your DNA

Mike Singletary can't do it clip.gif

If someone wants your DNA they don't have to hack 23andMe to get it. This is like when people say they want privacy but own a dozen smart devices with mics and cams. Not to mention how easy it would be to get your DNA from your trash/lunch.

Anyway, I did 23andMe. This thread actually makes me want to order another kit or two since they are on sale. Gift them.

Found out my grandpa was hiding a daughter. I never even heard of their existence.

Found out my aunt was hiding a daughter (gave up at birth I guess).

Here is my snapshot. I was surprised at how little Latino/Spanish was present. Almost zero. I love their food so much.
