OPINION The Wire - A Hindsight Discussion

Huh? Bro Avon understood String was a dead man regardless

The issue was was Avon going to go down w him
Let's separate the many, many fuck ups Stringer committed that led to Brother standing in that barbershop.

In Season 1? Avon wouldnt have given up String like that. He would have found a new connect rather than give up his boy, and if it came to it he would have soldiered up for him too. Its not like Avon was one to shy away from a fight.

But after all the snake shit String had done to lead to that point? Well, it went the way it went. My point is, the shit with D was the straw that broke the camels back.

Bro what connect u talking bout?

Brother Mouzone had Avon between a rock and a hard place violence wasn’t an option

Giving up String had nothing to do w D Angelo

Brother's threat to Avon wasnt violence. He said if Avon didnt give up Stringer, that Avon would lose his connect to New York.
Avon already lost his connect In NYC they got arrested after D Angelo got picked up

Hence why Avon was getting the package from Atlanta until Strunger got his hands on Prop Joe s package

lol fam what do u think Brother Mouzone is saying here
What do YOU think he is saying?

Avon is fully prepared to pay whatever monetary cost it takes to save Stringer. He multiple times, asks for a way to fix it. But Brother is having none of it.

And then Brother lays out the whole game, either Stringer has to go or Avon is done in "New York". And that's when Avon, resigned to the situation decides to give up String to keep his contact.

What do you think it meant by done in NY?

Losing his connections to New York which provided amongst other things, cocaine, guns, and muscle (ie Mouzone himself) all of which Avon could ill afford to lose, especially during a war with Marlo.
Them shits was already gone
Besides a hired Hitman like Mouzone Avon had no business in NYC

By the time Mouzone walks into that barbershop

Okay, so what exactly do you think Mouzone is bargaining with that caused Avon to give up String? Because he doesnt give him until after New York is threatened. That's the deciding factor.

And for the record he only ever lost his heroin connect in New York, his coke connect was unaffected. But yeah, if he wasnt getting something of value then Brother's threat would have no teeth, when it obviously did when it proved to be the deciding factor in Stringer's living and dying.

His best friend had just betrayed his family, not just Avon. Notice throughout the whole show Avon is always connected to family. His only mistakes are mistakes linked to family, because no one else can get that close. Avon is already a multimillionaire before the cops know he exist because he's in the shadows. They know Stringer Bell exist though, because his goofy ass is hanging out in the court room for a bloodhound like McNulty to sniff out

Avon's rise and power is connected to his family. Remember when they visited his brain dead uncle; "...and how you ain't gonna never be slow, never be late?" Brianna Barksdale is apart of it too, because its a family business. We even see Avon's girlfriend and one of the places he lives with her. We see D'Angelo's girl and baby, and he even reference their grandfather being in the game. They are a criminal family.

I say all that because its an important distinction between Avon and Stringer. We never hear about Stringer's family, see him with anyone he loves, or know much of his history. Stringer is a man without a country, whose only real loyalty is to himself.

Avon and Stringer parting ways was only a matter of time, because despite their success as a team, they were very different, but that difference also made them a dynamic duo; the gangster and the con-man. In the end, they both had been beaten by better gangsters and better con-men.
