We live in a world where hip hop - specifically rap is mainstream and dominant. It’s influential.

We also live in a world where streaming tells the whole story, apparently.

Drake isn’t even on the same planet as DMX as a rapper. For his time, DMX had radio bops that very few could compare - arguably Pac, BIG, and Jigga were the only ones to have that type of radio success.

TIL THIS DAY we still hear Party Up, What’s My Name, and Ruff Ryders Anthem played in stadiums during NBA, NFL, and even MLB games.

It’s easy to say Drake because of the time we live in. Drake wouldn’t have had access to rap on tracks as frequently as he does because that wasn’t the time. Now there’s studios in everyone’s home.

His best hope at the time would be Ja Rule’s peak.

DMX’s hits are almost 30 years old and still get airplay and run in stadiums. 30 years! That’s saying something.

No one has cracked my top 5 since 2000

I've shifted my top 5, Redman who's number 6 sometimes creeps in.... But my top 5 has been consistent.


But.... To Drake's credit, he's on so much shit... He's likely been in my most listened to since he's been out. I can't think of a time when there hasn't been a Drake song out that I didn't fuck with.... Like 3 years ago sliming you out with sza had me stuck...

The dude had a legendary run, but as a great, in my personal opinion, never cracked my top 10

Drake is acceptable today but would it back in the day?

I put it like this, which is more likely:

Drake dominate back then like he does now

OR

DMX dominate now like he did back then

Thats really what it comes down to. DMX’s music would be acceptable in both timelines. We can’t honestly say that about Drake.
