Has Social Media Ruined Battles In HipHop?

I had never heard of this but damn that KRS quote is cold as hell lol

"During the tour, Prince Be gave an interview to Details magazine in which he expressed skepticism of rapper KRS-One's activism: "KRS-One wants to be a teacher, but a teacher of what?" KRS-One and his crew, Boogie Down Productions, responded by storming a P.M. Dawn concert, forcing the group off the stage and performing their songs "I'm Still #1" and "The Bridge Is Over". Defending his actions to USA Today's James T. Jones IV, KRS-One said: "I answered his question. 'A teacher of what?' I'm a teacher of respect."

And it turns out PM Dawn was right before KRS coming out in defense of Afrikka Bambatta nasty ass saying he should be untouchable will always be wild as hell

He's just saying that because Nas bodied him with Ether.

Nah, he didn't.

If we had known back then what we know now, there's no way we would even think that Nas won.

I just found out recently myself that the "is that your chick" track was a subliminal directed at Nas.

Basically talking about his baby mother.

That track hits a lot different knowing what it was really about.

Welcome to 2000 with that revelation

Yeah, I doubt most people knew it at the time.

Otherwise there's no way they would be able to say Nas won that battle.

Nah it wasn't a secret at all. That shit was well known. Thats why there's 2 versions of the song and the one with the Nas disses is called "the lost verses".

Don't remember that at all.

Now, I remember hearing about the Lost Verses.........but no reference to them being directed at Nas.

Well you'd be in the minority on not knowing that song has Nas subminlinals in it

C'mon deadeye b

I might not have known, but I don't think I was in the minority.

Otherwise, I would've heard more people talking about it at the height of their beef.

After Nas dropped Ether, that was the main thing people were waiting for.

Which was to see how he would respond to Takeover.

Now, I heard that they had been throwing subliminals at each other for a while, but no one said anything about "Is that your chick" being one of them.

The only tracks being discussed in the beef were Takeover............Ether............and the Super Ugly track that Jay dropped after Ether.

Nothing else.

Just say you weren't tapped in like that during that time

It's ok

So I'm guessing you also didn't know Memphis Bleek's "Mind Right" also has a Nas diss that caught people attention and Nas responded to on a single of his? Its ok to say you don't actually know the songs that came before Takeover and Ether

I knew there were subliminals, but not which songs they came from.

So no, I wouldn't have noticed anything that obscure unless there was some kinda hype around it.

Which I don't remember there being any.

Regarding the question 'has social media ruined battles in hip hop'... I'd say yes to an extent, the same way its also ruined discourse in general... Youre either team a) or team b)...

Social media has kinda ruined the ability for people to debate songs and not have to fully commit to a side and just enjoy the diss tracks from both sides...

Another reason is people who dont even like hip hop join in on 'the viral moment' and pile on for whose winning... Like how many people jumped on the 'Not Like Us' trend??? Too many...

Also diss tracks seem less like a 'sport' these days and more like warnings of 'its on, on site'...

I get it. If people just enjoy the musical aspect of it and left it at that, it wouldn’t be as bad.

That’s not the age we live in though unfortunately.

But on the other hand the Drake/kendrick thing was supposed to be a “rap” battle. Put the lyrics on wax and let the people decide who’s better. It got personal and that’s when it went left. I think there’s still a place for it but it won’t be able to get there because everything is taken as a slight or disrespect.

Agree but to address the bolded... Its partly the social media aspect... As hanger ons and people on the outside of the camp, who woudnt normally have a voice in days gone by, hop on social media, stoke flames and before you know it its gone from wax to publicly embarrassing/goading the otherside and then you got houses getting shot up etc
