OUT NOW Nas & DJ Premier - Light-Years

Added to Calendar: 12-12-25

Nas chose these beats
Chill I was trying not to say this , but not only did he choose them ,DJ Premier made them and chose them and everybody around them also told them that this was suitable. Engineers, executives ,friends , and family.

Nas is definitely 1 of my favorite ever and I didn’t hate all those albums that people said had bad beats, but I also didn’t love every single album either but there are a few classics and jewels in the mid to late 2000s to 2010s “ Nas chooses wack beats “ ,“ Nas Lost” era

I don’t really understand what happened, but Preme had recent better beats .

Seeing the hate in real time on here is crazy. I really like the project besides a few duds but besides that everything is a go.

The acapella version of NYSOM 3 is perfect lol because that beat pisses me off every time I hear it. Maybe because I was expecting something timeless like the 1 and 2 NYSOM's and nostalgia is clouding my judgement but that shit is fucking terrible same for Junkies.

2 duds out of 15 is not a bad album for me.

I’m sayin. I don’t like 5 of the songs

I like more than I don’t like so it’s a win for me

On second listen, I'm, upping this to 8/10.

I think most of us can agree that Nas is in his immaculate form, lyrically. The real debate is the beats done by Premo. So, going down the line, here's my verdict of how his beats turned out when you match it with that Nas laid down on the track:

My Life Is Real - Cool start off, but not spectacular
Git Ready - Dope NY feel, nice.
NY State, Part 3 - Too slow, overdid the grittyness
Welcome to the Underground - Guitar-heavy, but solid
Madman - Pure hip-hop laced, dope.
Pause Tapes - I'm with this one
Writers - Nice uptempo feel
Sons - Laid back, solid
It's Time - Loved the "Fly Like An Eagle" flip
Nasty Esco Nasir - Not a fan, but fits the aesthetic
My Story Your Story - SOLID. Fits the back and forth between Nas and AZ
Bouquet - FLY as shit. One of my favorites.
Junkie - Reminds me of Madman a bit
Shine Together - Definitely forgettable
3rd Childhood - Not how I would've wanted the album to end.

Yo, this has to be the most polarizing shyt I've seen in a while....Peoples opinions are all over the place...Up here its loved and hated, in the chat with my dudes they luv it, other social media I'm seeing shyt like 9/10 to Nas needs ghostwriters and Preemo needs to hang it up....People talking about this shyt......

This what I’m goin’ thru exactly except tha “Nas needin’ ghostwriters” cuz for tha most part everybody agree Nas rappin’ rappin’…but besides that…it’s a toss up lol

Pete's still at it....

And the fact that so many people can’t pick up on the passive-aggressive shade here is wild. But then again, these are the same people who convinced themselves this album is a banger—and somehow a “classic” on the level of Illmatic—so there’s that.
I see Pete rock brought up several times in this thread. What's the backstory to what's going on with him? Is he sarcastically posting about supporting the album? If so why did he start hating on either of them?

In general, Pete just comes off like a jackass. Over the years, more and more stories have popped up about him being difficult to work with, doing people dirty (especially C.L. Smooth) and just overall moving like a dickhead. Funk Flex even aired out some of his dirty laundry on air when they were beefing, and C.L. basically confirmed a lot of it by liking all the posts and videos connected to it.

I follow Pete on social media for a min, and for every dope post, he’d throw up some off-the-wall, ignorant bullshit that made you question his intelligence—and his sanity. It got so bad I had to unfollow him at one point

With all that in mind, ever since the first King’s Disease album, Pete’s been sending passive-aggressive shots at NaS because of the Hit-Boy beats.
(He felt he could do better, and he's probably right to an extent , but IMO Hit-Boy did the best he could and deserves all the props for reigning NaS's passion for writing and his career in this new era, I enjoyed more of his production more than I originally intended.)

But I digress....A couple years ago, out of nowhere, he decided to sue NaS over alleged unpaid Illmatic royalties. The whole hip-hop community was stunned....including NaS himself. NaS responded with a slick dart on KD3 (“30”), nothing major, just a “I see how you moving” moment.

After that, it went quiet. No more news about the lawsuit, nothing. Then this year we see Pete popping up on the new De La Soul album (which is on NaS’ label) so naturally people assumed they squashed it behind the scenes and Pete got whatever bread he felt he was owed.

But now here he goes again… back on some passive-aggressive nonsense. Backhanded complaints and slick commentary at this new Preemo & NaS album.

The only question have is did he and Preemo have some unsolved issues? I can't call it because Preemo liked and commented on the posts in questions.
But Preemo is one of the most unproblematic cats I've seen in the game, he's not about putting "family business" out for the public. And NaS moves in the same way.
Pete however, is governed by another set of codes tho .

Edit.

and I say this...as Pete's is my 2nd all time fav producer next to Premier.

I also hate the narrative that if you dont like this album, you are not a “purist” or whatever they wanna label people. Rap fans know music and like it or don’t like it.
