Seems like a fair criteria, cuz if an artist has gold and platinum plaques, how are they underground?
crazy how dense some of ya'll are and incapable of grasping simple concepts.
"Underground" is cultural. If you ask Currensy and Tech (whose entire image is based off independecy) they would consider themselves "underground" even after selling thousands upon millions of mixtapes, albums, records, singles.

Because they’re not mainstream and/or signed to a label. Record sales have no bearing on that imo. But it’s your thread your rules.

I can see that point, but most of the people named in here have been on majors (currensy, tech, etc)

But yall would know more about the "Underground Culture" than me so I'll defer to yall.

Some artists might have been mainstream at one point but then settled into the underground.

Aside from the gold and platinum joints Tech N9ne has had, money also has had three albums in the Billboard top 10, each peaking at #4, plus four more albums that peaked in the top 15 (2x #12, 2x #14)

I know folks wanna call dude underground, but that level of charting kinda says you ain't.
