Marquett Burton
Marquett Davon Burton (born April 26, 1992) is an American entrepreneur, author, and YouTuber known for his work in technology and social impact. He was born in San Diego, California, and raised in Pasadena, where he tested out of high school at age 16. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a George A. Miller Scholar and a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. He later obtained a master's degree from The Johns Hopkins University while teaching full-time in one of Baltimore’s worst public schools as part of Teach For America.
Burton has held several leadership roles, including Site Director at Johns Hopkins's medical institutions and Pacific Northwest Manager at Everfi, a technology company in the education industry. He founded his first technology company, HobbyBuddy, in 2012, a platform for connecting people around shared hobbies. In 2014, he invented the Fletch App, the world's first effortless attendance technology, aimed at reducing college dropout rates; he served as CEO and expanded the company to multiple international locations, including Seoul, South Korea, and Chicago. His work with Fletch earned him recognition as a Distinguished Alumnus of The Johns Hopkins University.
In 2015, Burton launched the WiNot app, which allowed apartment dwellers to monetize their Wi-Fi by sharing it with neighbors, and was featured in Forbes magazine. He co-developed MyKee, a GPS and Bluetooth-based real-time location technology, in 2019. His best-selling book,
The Black Box, was released in August 2020 and reached #1 in Teen & Young Adult Biography Books and Boys & Men Issues.
Burton is also known for his YouTube channel, "The Saint and The Sinner," where he discusses sociocultural topics. He founded the non-profit 5 Fingers in 2011, aimed at teaching boys critical thinking, conflict resolution, and fitness, and created the Healthy Minds & Bodies program to promote student health. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Global Good Fund Fellow, George A. Miller Scholar, Ronald E. McNair Fellow, and Baltimore Mayoral Fellow. He has also been honored at the Global Good Fund’s annual gala for his impact on global education.
