Louisiana Is The Latest State To Remove Soda and Candy From Food Stamps

Lol not supposedly it is unhealthy. Alot of that shit is terrible for you. Obesity a huge (no pun intended) problem in America as well as diabetes. Both the top killers of black folks specifically.

But taking away people's choice to be unhealthy is a problem.

Like someone said, just make the healthier options more affordable. But they not gon do that. I do think people should educate themselves more on the cost of healthier food options. I know people who think they cant afford anything in Whole Foods. Not knowing that you could get a bunch of produce / fruits, etc for $50 if they knew how to shop for it.

They're not taking away the choice to be unhealthy. You can still do it, you just can't use government money to do so.

You looking at this wrong. It’s not about what’s best, it’s about individual choice and freedom.

What if they restricted the types of healthcare poor people get in Canada because of their choices? Like we’ll give you healthcare but if you smoke we’re not treating your COPD. If you fat we’re not treating your diabetes.
Not comparable. Nobody is taking away your choice and freedom to purchase those things they simply said you can't do it with food stamps. You can still purchase them with cash like everyone else.

So shouldn’t ask for better? I think we should get free healthcare too. But again to me it seems like this is only restricting folks on stamps. Talking about tax payers like people on stamps don’t pay taxes too is crazy.

Yall not socialist enough for me.

Sooooo... When do we start executing the poor, ethnic minorities, and "enemies of socialism" so we can be socialist enough for you?

I got plenty of guns, ammo, and knives over here; just let me know.

SNAP is supposed to be for food. You think there aren’t other things that cash needs to be used for when you’re broke? Rent, fuel, utilities, healthcare, etc.

It’s not a coincidence most of the people cheering this are from other countries. Y’all obviously have no clue what it’s like to be broke in the US.

What do your poor do? Just starve if they don’t have enough money for food? Panhandle? Have y’all ever been poor?

Plenty of liquor, weed, iPhones and Jordans in the projects so some of them folks got the money for a Snickers.
So if you’re poor through generational oppression (since you brought up the projects I assume you’re referring to black people) and are now dependent on the government it’s ok for them to tell you what to do with that assistance? It’s not like people are asking to buy clothes and shit. It’s still food.

I guess you’d be ok if they said all you get is a loaf of bread, rice, beans, government cheese, apples, and chicken too. I mean, that’s healthy enough and cost effective so why not, right? If they want a steak use cash, right?

We were on SNAP from 2011-mid-2012 and from early 2019-late 2021. I grew up poor until my moms got married again in '85. My father and his family lived in the projects gettin' food stamps and gov't cheese and shit for a number of years during layoffs from the railroad where he worked and the plant where my stepmother worked.

Ain't shit anyone can tell me about being poor in this country. And I fully support these restrictions.

You think poverty is just an American issue? My nigga get a grip. I wish I had food stamps coming up. That would have helped us alot. Shit I could use food stamps now.

Then buy food with it. Did you ever stop to think that if these same people weren't buying snacks, pop, and energy drinks, they would have more money for more actual food??

You made that up. No one said anything about any of that. We're addressing cookies, chips, snack cakes, pop, and energy drinks. Stay focused.

Word that shit ain't food. It's called junk food for a reason

So you don’t see the slippery slope? First it’s junk food and sodas. Once people are cool with that then the premise for that decision is used to further restrict.

And who are you to tell people what food they should eat? Would you want someone telling you?

I seen you all up in that Little Debbie thread. Don’t act like you wouldn’t have been pissed seeing kids when you were little breaking out those Nutty Buddy’s and you sitting over there with a box of damn raisin, lol. Talking about “you want to trade?”

Them “juices” be having just as much sugar.

Since I’ve been on a real workout journey my diet has changed (still can be much better) and I do read labels much not often.

Lost a lot of fat by eating just 50% better

Went from having a gut and a fat face to being in shape and feeling good.

Went on a cut to drop that bad weight ugly weight I had to like 175. Now I’m bout to bulk to get up to like 195

That junk food played a huge part and looking and feeling bad

I’m not saying this is a good or bad policy

Serious question, what did y’all do? Did y’all have a minimum wage that guaranteed you’d at least eat and be able to pay the bills? We don’t.

Were you able to get those jobs fairly easily? We can’t.

Did you have charity programs large enough to feed all the hungry? We don’t.

And that’s the thing. Who is deciding what’s bad? The US food supply isn’t the greatest as it is.

Don’t get me wrong, I know the food proposed to be banned is bad. And I don’t think it should be a staple in a diet. But damn, can I not get a box of honey buns from time to time?

As a point of fact, yeah, that's precisely what happened when I was a kid. Rasins were the norm in my lunches meanwhile kids whos families had more money were eatin' on the OG fruit rollups and assorted other snacks. Like I said: You can't tell me shit about being poor in this country. We would have navy bean or pinto bean soup for dinner multiple days a week. Moms used to send us to our grandmothers cribs for the weekend primarily so we could eat.

And, since this was never addressed the last time this came up: Why are the restrictions on WIC fine with y'all but not on SNAP??? With WIC they restrict you down to the brands you can buy and nobody bats an eyelash over it.

  • The government has no fucking money, it spends and collects tax revenue.
  • There are fuck all households surviving on food stamps junk food.
  • This is simply punishment for poor individuals who's most egregious offense is having the audacity to be poor in a country that cannot function in any way without their existence as poor people.
  • If sugar is the problem it can be addressed in legislation, these same states can tell their senators and reps to start a bill. They won't, because it's only about making poor people feel bad, a useless endeavor because the poor already feel bad because, they...are...fucking....poor.

It's like watching people yell at waiters. Taking what little power they perceive themselves to have, to try and belittle someone.

Y'all can't even be honest about your reasoning you don't WANT them to be able to buy any junk food...full stop. because you think they are less than. So any demand of them by someone superior is valid

All the mental gymnastics, boil down to: they are poor, and are receiving federal assistance and you think you should make demands and restrictions because you think you are better than them. Not that you think you're doing better, but that you are better than them because you're not the same level of poor.
